The Palace of Fine Arts has been home to the Exploratorium since 1969. The brainchild of late Manhattan Project scientist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer is one of the most popular points of interest in San Francisco. The museum combines art and science in a wide range of original and interactive exhibits that regularly draw over half a million visitors every year. More than just a standard museum, the Exploratorium is a functional laboratory of sorts. Performers such as John Cage, Philip Glass and Brian Eno have all lent their talents at the Exploratorium to create novel installations at one time or another.
Vitals and Tips
The Exploratorium’s website has won the Webby Award for Best Science and Education site several times since 1997.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, outside of public holidays, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Palace of Fine Arts and Exploratorium are located at 3601 Lyon Street, near Highway 101 and the Golden Gate Bridge.
