The Statue of Liberty was the culmination of a notable collaboration between Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, among others, to punctuate a new era of engagement between the U.S. and France. Since 1886, the U.S. National Monument, UNESCO World Heritage Site and bedrock New York City point of interest has been a beacon for the world’s “tired, poor and huddled masses”. Indeed, the indelible product of French craftsmanship has come to symbolize America’s ethos better than any other monument on U.S. soil.
Vitals and Tips
Over 3 million people visit the Statue of Liberty every year. The monument is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. National Park Service.
The Statue of Liberty’s crown re-opened to the public at large on July 4, 2009 for the first time since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Liberty Island is open daily except for December 25. Ferry access runs throughout the day, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
