The poster child masterpiece of the Art Deco movement is a U.S. National Historic Landmark with near-universal appeal. In New York City-wide polls, the Chrysler Building regularly comes out on top as a favourite point of interest and skyline attraction, ahead of the Empire State Building, Bank of America Tower and 40 Wall Street. From soup to nuts, architect William Van Alen and automobile executive Walter P. Chrysler’s mutual intentions for the skyscraper were bold. The tower’s 77 floors, stainless-steel crown, gargoyles and countless architectural details punctuate what is now a timeless Big Apple landmark.
Vitals and Tips
The Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world from 1930 until 1931, when the Empire State Building surpassed it.
Many of the Chrysler Building’s gargoyles and interior elements mimic various aspects of Chrysler automobiles.
While there are no formal tours of the Chrysler Building, the lobby is open to visitors during regular office hours.
