Known as ‘The Heart of the Florida Keys’, Marathon is a sandy city that the whole family will enjoy visiting. For beachgoers who like to relax and take life at a slower pace, this little city has a big attitude and is the perfect vacation destination. Located at the southernmost tip of Florida, this city is easily accessed by car, plane or boat. Located near the center of the Florida Keys, the islands of Marathon offer visitors plenty to do, such as dolphin encounters, water sports, deep-sea fishing and sailing.
For land lovers, there is art and culture to be found at the Marathon Community Center, as well as the Crane Point Museum. Other sightseeing options include traveling over the Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest segmented bridges in the world, and visiting the Dolphin Research Center and the Turtle Hospital. Before leaving this sandy locale, go shopping or dine at some of the local restaurants. Fresh seafood is served all day, often with ocean views and live music. With so much fun to be had in this sunny, tropical heaven, you will never want to leave Marathon.
When To Go
With highs only ever reaching around 97°F (36°C), Marathon has a wonderful year-round climate. Located at the southern tip of Florida in the United States, this city is surrounded by cool ocean waters and is shaded by palm trees. Although the official hurricane season usually starts the first week of June and runs to the end of November, the daily weather is actually quite calm and beautiful when there are no storms moving in. Average highs for the seasons are listed below.
December to February (winter) 75°F (24°C)
March to May (spring) 82°F (28°C)
June to September (summer) 89°F (32°C)
October to November (fall) 84°F (29°C)
Getting There
By car, Marathon can be reached by US 1, the Overseas Highway, which comes in from the mainland of Florida. The entire chain of Florida Keys is about 120 miles (193km) long. To reach Marathon from the mainland, the trip will take up to four hours.
To reach Marathon by air, visitors can either fly into the city or fly into Miami International Airport, Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood or Key West International. Ground transportation in the form of shuttles and rental cars can be taken to reach the city of Marathon.
The Amtrak train service will only take you as far south as Miami, Florida. From there you will need to take the Keys Shuttle, which is located at Miami International Airport. This shuttle provides service to all the Keys, as well as Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
