The Barbary Coast has left from Las Vegas, but the six Barbary Apes remaining in United States’ are thriving at the Las Vegas Zoo, or as it is officially known, the Southern Nevada Zoological Botanical Park where they dine each day a salad of corncobs, carrots, bananas, lettuce, oranges, and grapes. ... The Las Vegas Zoo is one of Las Vegas’ littlest-known treasures, due to the fact that its non-profit budget does not allow for advertising on a scale to compete with that of Las Vegas’ casinos. But those who make their way to the Las Vegas Zoo can view not only the rare Barbary Apes, but the even rarer Bali mynah birds; ostriches, emus, and wallabies; flamingos, brilliantly coloured conures, and every poisonous snake indigenous to the Southern Nevada area. Eagles, chimpanzees, lions, tigers, vociferous parrots, peacocks, river otters, and an alligator complete the menagerie.
While the Zoo, at one-half hectare in size, is not on the scale of any of the world’s premier zoological parks, its employees and designers have made the most of their opportunity. The river otters, for example, are housed in a special underwater viewing tank and kept supplied with live goldfish and freshwater clams so that they maintain their hunting skills.
The “Botanical” in the “Botanical Park” refers to the Las Vegas Zoo’s collection of unusual bamboo grasses, palms, and tropical cycads, which can flourish in desert sand or even on rock if they must. But the cycads and bamboo of the Las Vegas Zoo shelter the Alligator Pathway which is home to the Zoo’s two-metre long American alligator.
Visitors can purchase bags of bird seed for the many birds which roam at will through the Zoo, or goat food for the pygmy goats at the kid’s petting zoo. The Zoo hours are from 9:00-4:30 daily, and admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 2-12.
