The Hawaiian island of Maui provides the promise of a paradisal vacation to honeymooners, surfers and families alike. Home to breathtaking volcanic landscapes, "The Valley Isle" welcomes almost 2.5 million visitors a year. Second in size to the "Big Island" of Hawai'i in the archipelago, Maui is especially popular with tourists from the continental U.S., many of whom purchase property and homes on the coast after retirement. As a result, Maui's population has surged in recent years.

The principal town of Kahului, home to just over 20,000 people, is not a big draw with tourists, as most resorts on the island are concentrated in West Maui and South Maui. In order to make the most of any Maui vacation however, it's imperative to get around the island and view the spectacular scenery. The Road to Hana on the east coast of the island snakes around mountains, waterfalls and black sand beaches and Haleakala National Park preserves superlative natural wonders.
