Favourite Cities and Hotels in United States

Although some clamor to paint Detroit, Michigan as the posterchild for America's economic hardship of late, the inner city's urban decay and reputation as a crime-infested hovel have been overblown. While Motown's unemployment rates are inordinately high and race relations still tenuous, neither can mask the fact that the only major U.S. city to look south at Canada is a superb tourist destination.

Nor can the financial anguish of the automotive Big Three disguise the city's charms. With a metro population of 4.5 million, the smart money is on Detroit to bounce back in a big way. Whatever the future has in store, Detroit remains a vibrant Midwest hub.

Pewabic Pottery Building

A National Historic Landmark, the Pewabic Pottery Building is a unique early 20th century edifice that still seeks to uphold the ideals of the arts and crafts movement with free daily workshops.

Hart Plaza

With a centerpiece fountain by prominent landscape architect Isamu Noguchi, Hart Plaza is a wonderful urban congregation point in Detroit. Home to many outdoor festivals in the summer and ice rink in winter, the Plaza is a notable city pulsepoint.

Wayne County Building

The area known as Bricktown is going through a gentrification that illustrates the recent drop in city real estate prices, as many young professionals and artists seek the affordable but attractive confines of old Detroit. The Italian Renaissance-style Wayne County Building is at the heart of the urban revival trend.

David Whitney House

The Romanesque Revival David Whitney House is one of the most dramatic landmarks in Detroit. The former estate of a wealthy industrialist has an interior decor that features Tiffany glass, onyx and marble. Book a reservation at the restaurant inside to enjoy the view.

Fischer Building

The attraction of note in the New Center area of Detroit, the grand 1920's Art Deco Fischer Building is majestic skyline eye candy. The interior has wonderful mosaics and sculptures.

Hockeytown

Detroit is known as Hockeytown for a good reason. Although the city has the Detroit Pistons in the NBA, Detroit Tigers in MLB and Detroit Lions in the NFL, the Detroit Red Wings are the most beloved franchise. The NHL powerhouse sells out Joe Louis Arena throughout the regular season, from October to April.

North American International Auto Show

It makes sense that The Motor City would have a fine car show. The North American International Auto Show is the preeminent event of the year, with crowds in excess of 700,000.

Detroit International Jazz Festival

Close to 800,000 people take in this eclectic jazz festival in Hart Plaza over Labor Day weekend.

Detroit Electronic Music Festival

A pioneer city in electronic music and DJ culture, Detroit hosts one of the premier celebrations of the genre each Memorial Day weekend in May in Hart Plaza.

Detroit's climate is typical for the Midwest, with four seasons that feature cold, windy winters and hot, humid summers.

  • Winter (November to March) -9-9°C
  • Spring (April to May) 3-21°C
  • Summer (June to August) 14-29°C
  • Fall (September to October) 5-23°C

Detroit has an amazing history and culture, acknowledged as the birthplace of both the automotive industry and the highly influential Motown musical genre. No doubt you will have more activities to do than time to do them during your visit. For sightseers there are beautiful historic riverfront neighbourhoods and skyscrapers that pre-date the Great Depression. The Renaissance Center offers a number of skyscrapers and historic buildings as well. Old neighbourhoods such as Irish Corktown, Mexicantown and Greektown showcase Detroit’s diverse cultural roots. High rollers will enjoy the MGM Grand Detroit, Motor City and Greektown casino resorts. No matter when you come to the Motor City, you can catch a variety music concerts and shows, and the nightlife is abundant with a huge selection of discos and clubs. You can enjoy cruises on the Great Lakes or performances at a number of Detroit theatres such as the Century Club, Fox Theatre, the Detroit Opera House or the Orchestral Hall. The town hosts a number of important annual events as well. The North America International Auto Show is a January traditionalong with the Motown Winter Blast. Come to the Motor City in June for hydroplane races during Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest.

When To Go

Detroit definitely has four seasons and two of them are, by far, better times to visit this city of extremes. Spring and fall are the most tolerable seasons for most people as they offer pleasant temperatures and drier weather. The fall colour in Detroit is glorious, so those who love the changing leaves should visit in autumn. Summers are extremely hot and humid with frequent rainstorms. The highs can easily top 33°C (91°F), and the precipitation can be around 5 cm (2 in) per month. Winters are freezing cold with a lot of snow. Temperatures can drop to -7 °C (19°F) and it snows almost every day in Detroit in December and January. Spring brings a respite from the freeze with warmer temperatures, around 18 °C (64°F) and 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) of rain per month.

· Summer highs 30-33°C (86-91°F)

· Freezing winters; frequent snow

· Pleasant, dry spring and fall

Getting There

Detroit Metro Airport is located about 20 minutes from the city's centre and is easy to access via interstates 94 and 275. You can also take a taxi or the metro rail service to and from the airport, which offers service to major cities all over the globe. You can easily drive to Detroit via many major highways and interstates that converge within the downtown area. I-75, Fisher Freeway and Chrysler Freeway are north/south routes, and the I-94 Ford Freeway is an east/west route. There are also many routes that run through the various suburbs of Detroit. You should expect morning and evening traffic jams. Being a large metropolitan area, Detroit is accessible by bus and train as well. Greyhound and Amtrak have lines that run from cities all over the US.

· Air: Detroit Metro Airport

· Drive: Several freeways/interstates from all directions

· Bus/Train: Greyhound and Amtrak stations in town
