Situated right in the middle of the San Diego Bay is the island of Coronado. With a Naval base in the north and civilian housing, hotels and shopping in the south, this island offers science, history and natural beauty. There are many attractions to see such as the Hotel Del Coronado, a Victorian masterpiece. Just south of the hotel is Silver Strand where there are several Naval training facilities. On training days some gather to watch the intense workouts and drills of the Navy SEALs.
Just across the bridge from downtown San Diego, Coronado feels like it is a world away. This relaxed locale has some of the best beaches, resorts and excellent surf. Although the San Diego-Coronado Bridge can take you to Coronado, visitors often find it more scenic to go by ferry from Broadway Pier. There are beautiful sunsets at Point Loma that are a great way to end the evening. From the Museum of History and Art to golfing at Coronado Municipal Golf Course, visitors must visit Coronado when in the San Diego area.
When To Go
The weather in the coastal San Diego area is the best year-round. Moderate temperatures are the norm in Coronado. Average temperatures are around 21°C (70°F). Even though the mornings sometime begin with cloudiness, the sun typically peeks its head out by the mid-morning. The humidity is usually comfortable, and it seldom rains. From August to November, there are clear skies and great temperatures.
December through February: Average daily high 17°C (64°F)
March through May: Average daily high 18°C (65°F)
June through September: Average daily high 23°C (75°F)
October and November: Average daily high 20°C (68°F)
Getting There
To reach Coronado by air, flights will land at San Diego International Airport. The airport has ground transportation to easily get travellers to Coronado. The airport is located 10 minutes from downtown San Diego, and only 5 km (3 miles) from Coronado.
If travelling to Coronado by train, Amtrak brings visitors to the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. This is within easy walking distance of downtown San Diego and is very close to Coronado. Various modes of transportation are available to reach the island and passenger accommodations.
By bus, Greyhound has bus routes arriving daily from San Diego for those wishing to reach Coronado. The bus station is located in the downtown area off of Broadway Avenue. For schedules and ticket prices, visitors should check with their local station or online.
Air – To San Diego International Airport, then by bus or car to Coronado
Train – Also to San Diego, to the Santa Fe Depot, continuing by bus or car
Bus – Greyhound has daily bus service to Coronado
