General Information
A Pennsylvania town with a proud history, Allentown has not always had the best press, or luck for that matter. Billy Joel's catchy, eponymous 1982 song about the demise of blue-collar jobs in the Lehigh Valley, namely at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, is all most people know about Allentown. With a history that dates back to the mid-18th century, the city of 110,000 people did not formally become Allentown until 1867. The city's fortunes were indeed made in heavy industry, most notably in steel and textiles. As a result, many landmarks today hint at past glory as one of America's gritty economic engines. Fine attractions like the Allentown Art Museum, Museum of Indian Culture and William F. Curtis Arboretum make a trip to the city worthwhile. Good neighborhoods to explore include Old Allentown Historic District, West End Theater District and West Park Historic District.
