Stoke-on-Trent, or simply Stoke, is home to some 240,000 people. While no longer a hub of pottery, steel and coal, like countless other manufacturing centres in the United Kingdom, the city’s economy has matured into the service, information technology and distribution sectors. From the 17th century to the late 20th century however, Stoke was defined by what it made. Pottery was the city’s claim to fame and indeed, major labels like Wedgwood and Royal Doulton still operate their headquarters in Stoke. Alas, however, little manufacturing actually takes place in the city today, with all the factories, steelworks and pit mines having closed up decades ago. As a result, Stoke has had to carve out a new identity for itself, much in the same mold as a Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. The city has done well for itself in this regard and unfurls some truly remarkable points of interest for intrepid tourists to enjoy. Some of the best include the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Wedgwood Museum and Etruria Industrial Museum. The superlative Gladstone Pottery Museum is a notable linchpin on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
