Stansted Airport is located in the south of England in Essex, just 75 km from North East London. Known as London’s third airport, it welcomes almost as many passengers through its terminals as the big two – Heathrow and Gatwick. Stansted has carved out a niche for itself, however in providing low cost scheduled flights – both to Europe and further afield - with the likes of BMI Baby and Flybe amongst its operators.
Air travelers arriving at Stansted should check out the local area before dashing off to the bright lights of London, since, along with plenty of cost-effective accommodation on offer, the Stansted area has lots to entertain. For instance, Mountfitchet Castle & Norman Village is right on the doorstep, and the House on the Hill Toy Museum is bound to keep the family amused.
Nearby, Bishop’s Stortford is home to a nature reserve and the historic market town of Saffron Walden is a mere stone’s throw, with its many cultural and recreational attractions – plus it boasts a decent shopping center.

STANDSTED'S EVENTS
The Audley End Picnic Concerts are simply not to be missed if you are staying in the Stansted Airport area during July for rock, pop and Opera in magnificent surroundings.
Jazz in the Park is an event which takes place close to Stansted Airport at Saffron Walden. It’s highly recommended to pack a picnic and pitch up at Bridge End Garden in the month of June.
Bishop’s Stortford near Stansted Airport plays host to Berden Fete each year. For a traditional English fete you could do no better than this one, in July.
If you enjoy the great outdoors then why not book a place on Wild Camping at Hatfield Forest which takes place right under the nose of Stansted Airport.
Cazfest gets better and bigger each year. Head to Bishop’s Stortford’s Sworders Field in July and join in the fun. Easily accessible from Stansted Airport.

WHEN TO GO
· Stansted Airport’s southerly location means it has a mild pleasant climate and receives lots of sunny days during the summer. Because of its temperate climate winters don’t get as cold as other parts of the UK too.
· Expect summer temperatures to get as high as 22°C on average during the day, and fall to a minimum of around 11°C at night. Winter temperatures usually get no lower than 6°C, but recent winters have shown that temperatures around Stansted can fall below freezing, and night time frosts are not uncommon.
· Rain is never far away – whatever the season and days which start out fine can end up showery, so carry an umbrella with you, and pack a raincoat.
GETTING THERE
· Stansted Airport is well connected by road to the rest of the UK – the M11 Motorway is right alongside.
· National Express operates a service which leaves every 10 minutes to London Victoria, a journey which takes around 80 minutes dependant on traffic. Tickets are cheap and booking ahead makes them even cheaper.
· Stansted Airport Railway Station runs a frequent service to and from the airport and the centre of London, and trains run regularly to the Midlands and the East of the UK. The Stansted Express runs every 15 minutes into Liverpool St Station London.
