Naturally being Scottish, one of the things that Perthshire does best is alcohol. Get on the Perthshire ‘Whiskey trail’, taking in the distilleries of Aberfeldy, Crieff and Pitlochry, or sample a locally brewed ale from the Moulin micro brewery.

Perthshire has a fascinating history with stunning ancestral homes complete with secret panels, and the lingering atmosphere of doomed romances and tragic rebellions. You can visit Castle Menzies where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed, take a tour of Glamis Castle, the Queen mum’s childhood home, or take in magnificent Scone Palace where Robert the Bruce was crowned. Perthshire, located in central Scotland, was first established as a local government in 1890. The city is known for its large size and has often been called the “big county” of Scotland. Perthshire Climate

Perthshire enjoys a cool and rainy climate, which can be quite cold in the winter and mild through the spring and summer. The winter months of November through February see average highs of 6ºC (43ºF) and average lows of 1ºC (34ºF). Summer temperatures warm up to a moderate 20ºC (68ºF), making summer the best time to visit.

Getting There & Around

Glasgow Airport is the closest major airport to Perthshire and can be reached by hired car or train in about 75 minutes. Efficient trains and buses connect Perthshire to all of the major cities of Scotland.

It is best to have a private or hired car in the city, but transport can also be found on the local buses. When the weather is nice, many of Perthshire’s residents can be seen riding bicycles or getting around the town on foot.

The Perthshire Woodland Garden in Pitlochry gets transformed into the Enchanted Forest for three whole weeks every October with a stunning light and sound show.

Fun, games and a whole lot more at the Scottish Game Fair in July. Traditional Scottish fare is on offer at this Perthshire event.

You can’t leave Perthshire without watching a man in a caber toss a caber – so, spruce up your sporran and get down to the banks of the River Tay in August for the Perth Highland Games.

When To Go

Perthshire’s gentle climate has long been a draw for tourists, which also provide a perfect environment for its many outdoor pursuits. Perthshire weather however is slightly cooler on average than that of England, with shorter winter days, but long summer days – at the end of June there is only three hours of darkness.

January and February are by far the coldest months with temperatures down to an average of 5 °C while summer temps are on average around 19 °C with the warmest months being July and August.

Scottish weather can be damp and cloudy and rain is a common occurrence, so don’t forget to bring an umbrella and wellies!
