Big Ben has held a number of impressive records over the last century and a half but the clock is perhaps most admirable for its uncanny reliability. The five-ton clockwork mechanism kept accurate time throughout the entire Luftwaffe Blitz of London in 1940 and 1941. The belfry chimes also rang on cue for the duration of the war. Vitals and Tips
For residents of the UK, tours of Big Ben require reservations of up to six months in advance. Unfortunately, the clock tower is not open to overseas visitors.
The clock tower of the Palace of Westminster is a popular backdrop in films, most notably in 28 Days Later and The Thirty-Nine Steps.
