As the birthplace of The Beatles and the Merseybeat sound, Liverpool's place in popular culture is eternal. The gem on the River Mersey packs a fairly diminutive package. After all, with under 500,000 people, the port city is no Manchester or Birmingham. However, with World Heritage landmarks galore, a wonderful sports and music scene and of course, the invariable presence of John, Paul, George and Ringo, Liverpool is a giant.

It starts with the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City. Six distinct locations comprise the site: William Brown Street, Castle Street, Duke Street, Stanley Docks, Albert Dock and Pier Head. Terrific inherent attractions include The Beatles Story, Tate Liverpool, World Museum Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery, among many others. A stroll about historic Liverpool is a treat to savor and clear-cut evidence beyond a doubt that the former European Capital of Culture is a premier tourist destination.

Liverpool Rundown

Liverpool is a northern UK city which will probably be connected for all eternity with those loveable mop tops, the Beatles. Music pilgrims descend on the city in their droves intent on frequenting the places their idols once performed in, like the Cavern Club, or visiting the places where they grew up – John Lennon lived at Mendips and Paul McCartney at 20 Forthlin Road. ... Once all the Beatles sites have been exhausted, there’s plenty of reasons to stay in Liverpool. It’s a city knee deep in cultural and historical attractions, and was nominated City of Culture in 2008, so wade through them in your own time. Albert Dock is home to Britain’s second Tate Gallery, Tate Liverpool where you can’t help bumping into a Klimt, Salvador Dali or Picasso – plus it’s an easy stroll from the centre. On the way you could take a gander at Liverpool’s most well known buildings, the Port of Liverpool Building or the Royal Liver Building – the most iconic in the city, with its fabled liver birds nestling on top. Or, hop on a boat at the Pierhead and take a ferry cross the Mersey...altogether now!

WHEN TO GO

· Liverpool, like the rest of Great Britain, has a moderate climate and four seasons with no major extremes in temperature.

· Summers are not usually too hot with average temperatures of around 20°C o so during July and August. Past years have seen some days with temperatures of over 30°C, but this is the exception to the rule. Winters can get a little cold due to Liverpool’s northerly aspect but generally temperatures of around 4 or 5°C can be expected.

· Liverpool’s location on the coast and the fact that it is quite high above the sea level mean that the city gets quite a bit of rainfall – meaning – always be prepared with waterproof clothing and an umbrella whatever the time of year.

HOW TO GET THERE

· John Lennon Airport (tagline – ‘Above us Only Sky’) is just 10km from the city centre and operates flights to over 60 worldwide destinations. Airlink buses run frequently between the airport and the centre as does Mersey Travel.

· National Express run from Liverpool Lime Street Station to and from most of the UKs main cities – London is a five or six hour journey, and highly competitive fares are usually available.

· Lime Street Station connects Liverpool to just about everywhere – London is a three hour journey and Manchester around 45 minutes.
