Upon arrival in Jersey, you may find it difficult to work out whether you are in Britain or France. Jersey’s location - just northwest of France but in the English Channel - means it has a mixture of both influences. For example, you will find French road names but English is the common language spoken. Jersey is a British Channel island and Crown dependency, but it rules itself. Plenty of high earners live here, Jersey being an offshore tax haven, and there are plenty of exclusive Michelin starred restaurants, jewellery shops and high end designer goods to cater for them. But the farmer’s markets are well stocked with local produce and the French Markets like the Fete de Noue Christmas Market offer a range of traditional wares, illustrating the fact that Jersey existed well it became a finance centre. JERSEY EVENTS
Long live flower power. The Jersey June in Bloom Floral Festival is a must, culminating in a Rose Show at Samares Manor plus talks and tours with expert horticulturalists.
The Bonne Nuit Harbour Festival includes games on the beach, a Miss Bonne Nuit competition and more at the end of June at Jersey’s Bonne Nuit Bay.
The Big Gig in the Park is an annual Jersey event held in Howard Davis Park during July with big names plus local talent.
The Grassroots Music Festival features an eco-village – an event which is fast becoming a hugely popular fixture during the last week in July at the Val de la Mar Reservoir.
Jersey Fish Festival offers fun of a marine variety, at St Helier Harbour with music, crafts and cooking demos in August each year.
Airtel – Vodafone Jersey Seaside Festival is held just before the Battle of Flowers. A day of fun in August.
The Battle of the Flowers has a Grand Day Parade and a Moonlight Parade during August. Come and see flowers fight. One of the best carnivals in Europe.
The Jersey Film Festival is held yearly during August with great alfresco screenings in Howard Davis Park.
Jersey Live Festival is held in September. A very cool musical event – turn up tune in, and chill out at Jersey International Showground.
The skies above Jersey come alive during the International Air Display. One of the largest in Europe during September.
WHEN TO GO
· Jersey’s climate echoes that of southern England – but tends to be more reliable and sunnier.
· Average temperatures between May and the end of September range between 20 to 21 °C. However July and August can see temps rise to 25 °C or higher. January temperatures fall to around 9 °C. Warm seas of around 17 °C make for good swimming conditions during the summer months.
· Rainfall falls mainly during the cooler months of winter.
GETTING THERE
· Jersey Airport has flights run by British Airways and Air France, which run regularly from London airports and other mainland airports. Aer Lingus also offers flights from Dublin, Ireland. The flight time from London is around 50 minutes only.
· Condor Ferries run a service from the UK mainland and from France. HD Ferries run a service from Guernsey, St Malo and Cherbourt and the Manche –iles-express operate a service from Guernsey, Sark, Granville and Carteret.
