The Royal Mile measures close to 2 km-long and is in point of fact, a succession of streets that join two grand symbols of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Abbey. Only Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town rivals the thoroughfare in popularity. As a result, the Royal Mile teems with tourists throughout the year, as millions descend on such indelible landmarks as The Hub, site of the Edinburgh International Festival, New College and Gladstone’s Land. The bottom of the Royal Mile contains the grand Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the Monarch of the United Kingdom in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II spends one week in the palace every summer.
