Dundee’s past includes links to exploration – Captain Scott’s research ship the Discovery which he commandeered before he set off for the South Pole now lies at Discovery Point, part of the reclaimed Dundee Waterfront. Naval enthusiasts will also enjoy a visit to City Quay the newly revamped Victoria Docks which is home to the Frigate Unicorn, the oldest British-built ship still afloat after its initial launch in 1824.

4) When to Go

· Being in the north of the UK Dundee can experience quite cool temperatures however like the rest of the UK weather is not on the whole prone to extremes, and far warmer than areas on similar latitudes. Dundee’s location on the east coast also shelters it from the gales which typically batter the West of Scotland.

· Typical summer temperatures are around 20 -25°C with winter temps on average dipping to around 3-4°C. UK weather is known to be unpredictable however and temperatures can exceed the average or drop well below.

· Dundee tends to experience less rain than other areas in Scotland due to the rain shadow of the western uplands. This does not, of course, mean to say you won’t encounter a shower or too, so come prepared.

5) Getting There

· National Express operates two services a day direct to London from Dundee – at amazingly low prices, and as low as £35 – it’s a long way to London. Scottish Citylink does what it says on the tin – connects cities in Scotland, with low fares.

· Trains run from Dundee to Edinburgh at a cost of around £18 one way with a journey time of around one and one quarter hours.

· Visitors arriving by air have Dundee Airport at their disposal with daily scheduled flights between London City airport, Birmingham and Belfast.
