Canakkale Gallipoli General Information
One of the reliable key factors in Turkey’s development as a nation has always been the relative security of the country’s seaways. To wit, the phenomenal rise of Constantinople, now Istanbul, as a world power stems quite lucidly from the strategic maritime safeguards of the Bosporus and the Dardanelles. ... Read more »
The Turkish Straits were imperative channels between two continents well before the notion of a “Europe” or “Asia” was even a germ of a thought. For thousands upon thousands of years, these links between the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, Sea of Marmara and Black Sea have lit the fuse of war and built civilizations. Amid this backdrop and spirit, the Dardanelles harbour city of Canakkale thrives today. Across the Gallipoli peninsula on the western edge of the Turkish mainland, Canakkale is first and foremost a temporary base for ferry and tour groups on the way to Troy and other ancient sites. The Canakkale waterfront lures considerable crowds on weekends however and is a magnetic hive of activity. Vital points of interest in the vicinity of town include the Gallipoli Peninsula War Monuments and Historical National Park, Cimenlik Castle, Canakkale Archaeology Museum and indeed, Ruins of Troy. A nice surprise for oenophiles is the relative preponderance of a legacy viticulture in the region, with a rather amenable Mediterranean climate to support the growth of Semillon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Carignan grapes.
