Bustling Bodrum
If you’re looking for time-honoured Turkish culture, most people’s experience of Bodrumis about as traditional as a sloppy kebab in the early hours of Sunday morning. But damn, a 3 a.m. kebab is a fantastic experience – and the same can definitely be said for this ritzy resort town. ... Read more »
The club scene here is probably the loudest in the Aegean, so if you’re after a party you’ve made the right stop. The al fresco Halikarnas disco is the wildest way to experience the outdoors, but if you’re hungry for a taste of culture you won’t be too hard-pressed to find it in Bodrum. Between the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the famous Windmillsand the neighbouring towns of Gumbet and Turgutreis, Bodrum still clings to its ancient charm when everyone else is too busy having a good time.
BODRUM’S TOP 10
10. Bardakçı Relax for a day at this private and uncrowded beach. |
5. Shipyard Has been many things in its time, including a defence against pirates. |
9. Bardakçı Hamam This mixed-bathing spot looks a bit shabby from outside, but its opulent marble interior makes up for it. |
4. French Tower The remains of a mystery woman lie covered in gold jewels and a crown in this tower. |
8. Ancient Theatre This hillside theatre used to seat 13,000 people, and up to 26,000 if they all sat on each other’s laps – which they did! |
3. Museum of Underwater Archaeology People reckon this is the most important museum of its kind in the world. A big claim, but not unfounded… |
7. Glass-Shipwreck Exhibit This huge (for its time) ship sank in 1025, and is displayed here after being excavated in 1973. |
2. Mausoleum OK, so most of it is gone, but it’s still worth a look – and there’s plenty lying around nearby, too. |
6. Myndos Gate This newly restored gate is the only original part of the city walls built in the fourth century BCE. |
1. Castle of St Peter Used to defend the city during WWI and now home to a pretty nifty museum. |

WHEN TO GO
- Spring and autumn are popular times to visit, as the temperatures remain around 20°C (68°F).
- The winter months are not too cold during the day, but the nights can seem pretty chilly and showers are frequent.
- Peak season is June to August. The sun is out, the rain is nowhere to be seen and the crowds are everywhere.
GETTING AROUND
- Bodrum is a small city, so walking is a good option for exploring the local scene.
- Another good, cheap way to get around is by dolmuş. These are shared taxis that follow a fixed route.
- You may want to consider hiring a car for travelling further out, but lots of local tour companies include transport in their services.
