The Winchester Hotel & Spa
3.6 out of 5

Dirty, drafty leisure club and no hot water in showers marred the stay. Paper-thin walls made noise a problem. Unrequested alarm call early on Sunday not a great way to wake up!

The hotel was nicely refurbished in a modern style and was excellent value for money. Breakfasts were good. However, there was no lift and corridors were quite narrow (I had assumed a large hotel would have these facilities).

About ten minutes walk from the main town. Quite ordinary from the outside, though once inside it was a pleasant surprise; the reception area was very modern. Our room accessed by a very old and shabby hallway was really lovely, the decor very attractive. Clearly a great deal of thought had gone into restyling it along with the rest of the hotel. We arrived early and the lady on reception welcomed us with a smile and was very helpful. Actually checking in with a different lady was a different matter. She insisted on continuing what was clearly a very personal telephone call - we could hear everything, she kept us waiting whilst we heard 'how good she was at some sport'. Breakfast was good value for money and though there was a slight delay for tea/coffee I cannot complain. Overall, would stay there again, though I fear prices will go up when modernisation complete.

The hotel is currently undergoing renovation - be careful to get a new room as old rooms are apalling, rock solid lumpy beds, blanket without duvet, cracked tiles in the bathroom and poor tv reception. New rooms are much much better with big bouncy bed and less depressing decor!

We should have been warned that major reconstruction work was going on. The whole place was freezing cold and very uninviting including our room where the radiator was turned off and the radiator tap missing. I had to remove the tap from the bathroom to turn the radiator in our room on. We were pleased to get in the car and warm up!!!! The staff were helpful and the food in restaurant for dinner and breakfast was very good.

The hotel was undergoing renovations at time of stay so room was not as per brochure pictures. However it was on a special deal so the room was value for money and the included breakfast was supberb. Gym facilities were good to unwind with swim or sauna and the hotel is only 10-15min walk to town centre so very central.

Nice hotel, conveniently located, close to city centre but quiet, good buffett breakfast. Leisure facilities looked good, alas, I didn't use.
