The Whitehall Hotel Chicago
4 out of 5

The Whitehall was a great way to experience Chicago. Located in the more happening part of town, with the pier and train stations close by. Beautifully decorated and clean, rennovations did very little to affect our enjoyment of this hotel.

It was hot in the hotel. The elevators are very small and very slow. Both were usually not working at the same time. There are not coffee pots in the rooms and when I went down each morning the coffee was already gone (staff had already cleared it) or they were out of coffee and nobody to refill it. There were no outlets to use for iron. Had to set ironing board in small bathroom. It was a good location, but for $170/night it was not worth it. Plus, it was an additional $150 for 3 day stay for parking.

Overall a great value for the price. In midwinter, on a snowy evening, it was somewhat cold in the room, but still a cozy bed with plenty of comfort

While the rooms were dated, they were comfortable, especially the beds, the bath was well complemented, including nice big bath robes. At first we had trouble with the overhead heater in the bathroom, one mention to the staff and it was quickly taken care of. Similarly we had a problem with our bedside clock, but it was replaced within a few minutes. Even though the attached Fornetto restaurant was undergoing some renovation, the hotel lounge bar was comfortable, and the service and food in the restaurant was excellent. We have stayed at many hotels in Chicago, but if you are looking for an older, homey European feel, at good value, this is the place.

Hotel is 1 block from Hancock, great location. Staff was very accommodating. We stayed in this hotel for part of our honeymoon. Wife made some chocolate covered strawberries, then we forgot them at a different location and she was very disappointed. To our surprise, a friend of ours called the hotel, talked to the chef, and the chef surprised us with chocolate covered strawberries on the house. Quite a good surprise to enter the room with a plate of nicely decorated treats on the bed. On a slightly more negative side however, the walls in the hotel are pretty thin and you will hear your neighbors enter/leave and watch TV.

The hotel is a tad run down and could use a renovation. The room was clean and the staff was helpful. Given the low price and location of the Whitehall Hotel I would stay there again.

My neighboring guests had a party all night long. Security came up 4 times until they finally were removed. I spoke with the hotle the next day and they didnt care that i got no sleep. They made me feel like they already had their money and didnt care about me.

Location is great; restaurant for dinner was great; staff, very attentive and helpful. One flaw--the lever on the toilet worked only if you pressed it half-way in straight, then very forcefully and quickly pressed it all the way in...we had to have staff show us and then try it again under supervision--still worked only 1/2 the time--this needs to be fixed. We still recommend it and would stay there again.

I had a good experience with the staff at the Whitehall Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable. The location is great, only a block from the Hancock Observatory and the Magnificent Mile. The front desk staff, Chad especially, was very helpful and friendly.

Great locaion Aformer 5* hotel. A litle dated now, but everything was nice, clean. No complimentary food. TV's were old but sufficient. Good value if booked at a discount.

I have stayed at the Whitehall several times in the past and have enjoyed much better experiences. This stay was in room 405 . The bathroom in this room was designed for children, the size was terrible. The tub/toliet area was no bigger than a bathroom stall in aTarget store. My daughter and I are not large people each weighing approx 120-130 #s, my two grandsons ages 7 and 5 were with us. Only my grandsons were comfortable in this bathroom. My complaint is not that it was too small for 4 guests, the complaint is with the toliet/tub space

The hotel is historical, but it does need some cosmetic care. Wallpaper peeling, paint chipped, worn rugs. Bed was comfy. You had to call room service to get ice and they put their hand out for a tip. Spiff it up Whitehall!

This hotel has a great location and friendly staff. The rooms are small but comfortable. This is a boutique hotel so everything is outdated. Now for the bad par. I got stuck on the elevator at least 3 times. At least once I was stuck for at least 10 minutes. The elevator dropped like I was on a ride at an amusement park. I was so terrified to take the elevator that I walked up 10 flights of steps several times. I told the front desk staff and they assured me it was being fixed yet I kept getting stuck.
