I booked the tower but was surprised to find I was upgraded to the historic part...without even asking! It is a beautiful true five-star hotel. Even if it is a bit over your budget, I would recommend staying here. You can have breakfast watching at the sun rise while looking at boats and the India Gate out the window. It is a historic attraction itself...and you can't stay in the Taj Mahal in Agra, so stay in this one instead. Paul from Canada

Being Indian, we have wanted to stay at the prestigious Taj Mahal hotel ever since I could remember. We decided to stay there over the Christmas holiday break. The hotel, the service, the ambiance and the atmosphere was to die for. It started with the staff greeting us with garlands as we checked in followed by impeccable Indian hospitality service. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was that we made the mistake of not making a reservation for lunch on Christmas day and it was virtually impossible to find a place for lunch on Christmas day.

The Taj Palace hotel is beautiful and everything a 5 star property should be. The food is delicious and the staff is very attentive and service-oriented without being overbearing. My only gripes are that for the amount of money it costs to stay there, they should not charge for internet access. Also, the rooms in the tower are fine/nice, but small and don't give the feeling that you're staying somewhere unique/special as I'm sure the pricey palace wing rooms are.

Get car service to/from the airport, also used for a driving tour of Mumbai... Drivers were very knowledgeable and made us feel safe. When we arrived, we did not have to check in at the front desk, they already knew my name and took us right up to the room and wrote down our credit card number for incidentals. Nice service. Great breakfast buffet. Walking distance from the Gateway of India and the Elephanta caves' ferry. Close to many other South Mumbai attractions.

Great stay at this icon in Mumbai. Staff all very helpful and friendly. For a ' weekend special' it would have been good to have breakfast included. Free parking available but high charge for internet. It is not obvious when booking how one can book in the ' Palace' wing. All bookings put you in the Tower wing. Housekeeping service was excellent.

Certainly one of the hotels which earn the qualification "Leading hotels of the world" in every respect. We hope to return there soon again.

Whether on business or pleasure this hotel offers good facilites and location. The new wing is much like any other modern hotel. It is worth a look into the heritage wing, although the rooms are more expensive and very similar - so probably not worth the extra.

The Middle East restaurant on the top floor offers an interesting and exciting range of food. The Indian restaurant is good and the food interesting, although a little too rich. Interesting people stay at the hotel. While we were there the Rolling Stones checked in - along with their entourage of 150 people - as part of their India tour.

Taj Mahal Palace is one of the world''s best hotels. It was previously Old Wing but in its new shape it has its own check in and service desk as well as club lounge which is very nice. Another feature which is great is the floor "butler" - one number to call and you get everything from ice and extra blankets to laundry pick up fast and very friendly. The Golden Dragon is a great Chinese rest even compared to the best in HK. The Sea löunge very nice for lunch with enough space between the tables for private conversations. I used to stay in the Taj 4/5 times a year during the 70s and 80s and this is the first time I am back since the renovation and am very impressed.

The rooms in the tower are dated, and they did have a musty, damp smell. Perhaps incense in the rooms would help?
