The Strathcona Hotel Toronto Guest Reviews

This hotel was recently renovated but already shows signs of fatigue. Wardrobe configuration with TV very strange and panelling was dislodged from poor workmanship. Beds were uncomfortable and heater sounded like a jet engine when it came on, therefore disturbing sleep. Also in this day and age of technology and inexpensive data packages, it's not too hard to provide some complimentary wireless connectivity to guests - if not in rooms at least in the lobby area. If boutique hotels can afford it, then so can business and standard hotels!

The location is perfect for any events located in the downtown area near or at large concert or sports events. The price was right for a short visit in the city. There is a buffet style breakfast and a la carte options in morning and noon. The next time I stay I will opt for the larger room though the rooms on the lower levels were somewhat cozy for two and had no fridge. I had noticed that executive suites are better equipped with flat screen tvs and iPod docks. Overall it was a great stay and great value. The room was not conducive for company just sleeping. No chairs or table. When I opened the door fir the first time the feeling I got was "it will do"

It's across from the hotel where the Queen stays so considering the good rate, there's no way I could write a totally negative review. In fact most of the service was great. There were problems, though: 1. I called ahead of time to see if there was free WiFi and was told yes. The whole reason we went with this hotel is that no others had free WiFi and that means a lot to us since we're from the U.S. and pay roaming charges to use the Wireless 3G network. But when we arrived I called the front desk and was told there never was free WiFi, that it was $10 for three days. To make it up to me the desk clerk made it $10 for four days (to cover our four-day visit). 2. The beds were rock-hard. We had two single beds even though we had been expecting one big bed or two slightly larger ones. The beds had to be little since the room was so cramped (but then, that's probably owing to the low rate in the great central location). At the front desk they tried to upsell us to a larger room with bigger beds but this was no free upgrade--instead we had to pay for it. As it was, they said all the beds in the hotel were this hard so there were two reasons we didn't change rooms. Instead they added extra padding to our beds and it made the stay a little more tolerable. But it was still difficult to sleep. 3. The restaurant in the basement was totally dirty, stinky and noisy with drunks watching sports. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think there should have been a division between a pub area and a restaurant area for travelers who arrive late (like us) and want dinner without paying the outrageously high prices at the restaurants in this particular area of Toronto. 4. The concierge knew nothing about the car rental agencies in the area. We sat with him for 20 minutes with no resolution on any kind of deals. We ended up booking ourselves over my iPad (through O of course) and got to the rental location only to discover there was an extra $5 fee that does not appear on O, and that the actual pickup location was miles away...we'd have to be shuttled to it. We asked the car rental guy if he knew the concierge at the Strathcona...he had no idea who he was. That concierge needs to get up from that desk and go around town pressing the flesh, asking what local businesses can do for his guests. Then he can sit at his desk, make phone calls, call people by their first names and set things up for his guests. Also he could have warned us about the $5 fee and told us where to actually go to get the car instead of us going on a wild goose chase. Or he could have had the $5 fee waived for referring his guests to this particular car rental agency. But, some things were good...the upstairs restaurant was fabulous, good food at great prices and great service. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, even when there was a problem...especially when there was a problem, because there were a few. The only down moment came when a clerk dropped my carry-on bag while storing it on the last day, and laughed and said she hoped there had been nothing breakable in it (fortunately there wasn't). But the whole thing ended with a bang when the concierge swiftly came over to give us better service with the bags, then when we were told that the $10 fee for the internet had been waived (perhaps word had gotten around about our troubles). A rough start, but nice save Strathcona!

Great location, great price. However as they have window A/C heaters, you can hear the traffice noise all night long. Cars, trucks...even when they back up..BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.

Despite that fact that they could not readily find my online reservation, they made it good. The location is awesome - walking distance of the harbour, fine dining and shopping. The parking situation was unpredictable and the garage entrance next door would be closed at random times. The room was exceptionally clean and that means a lot to us. The cost was very reasonable - we will definitely book there again.
