The Portland By Thistle Manchester Hotel
4 out of 5

My friend and I stayed in a twin room at this hotel on our first visit to Manchester. The twin room was small but comfortable and there was enough room for us to maneuver around when getting ready for a night out. The room was basic, two beds, t.v and dressing table, however it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was smaller than expected, but again it did the trick for us and there were no problems sharing it. The location was very central...we were just 5 mins away from the Arndale shopping centre and there were nice bars and cafes close by. At night we attempted to explore Deansgate, which is apparently the hub of night life in Manchester, however we perhaps ended up at the wrong side as we did not have much luck in finding bars, but we did go to a lovely Italian restaurant on Liverpool road and I think had we explored a little further we would probably have found some trendy bars close by...if only it hadn't been raining and freezing cold! Staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly....overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel for couples and friends looking for a central location to explore Manchester.

The worst part of our stay was right at the beginning. Neither the rather dark, gloomy and cramped reception area, nor the single person manning the desk was able to cope with 3 parties arriving at the same time. The prompt arrival of a second staff member, friendly and efficient, solved the problem. The room was small, as to be expected in a 3 star British hotel, but clean, with a newly refurbished bathroom with excellent shower. The buffet breakfast was excellent. With a central location, only 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly Station, and close to all the places we wanted to go, and reasonable price, I would recommend the Portland Thistle to anyone travelling on a budget.

Compact room (not ideal if you are a little on the large side!). Everything clean, good sized flat screen TV, digital safe. Air con/heating completely controllable, but a bit noisy. Close up view of decor within bathroom revealed a bit of attention needed (not nice to see untidy, peeling bathroom sealant when you're relaxing in the bath). Could do with air extraction within bathroom. Staff in reception were professional, but in no way welcoming - completely lacking any warmth or friendliness. Didn't stay in for breakfast...much better options (& value for money) within restaurants close by in the city.

Being used to American sized hotel rooms, the rather stark and shoebox sized rooms were quite shocking. The staff worked with us (and were so nice it was almost unbelievable) to find us a room we were happy with. Breakfast is overpriced at ten pounds. Walk over the road for a freshly cooked English cafe breakfast for 3.99 GBP. Did not see the leisure center. Do not miss eating in China Town, which is located a five minute walk away.

nice hotel, friendly staff, allowed early check in which was very nice after long flight from Australia. Average size room but clean. Booking did state had wifi internet included but did not get it when asked for it. Asked a new person at front desk and was give a 24 hour BT wifi card. Not sure if I would have got one if stayed more than 1 day. Would stay again.

If it is location you need in Manchester , then this is the hotel. Food is good and served late at night which is a benefit.

The Thistle Hotel is in a fantastic location in Manchester and very central. The pool is small and is called a "plunge pool" although you can swim its very short in length. The jacuzi is lovely like a hot bath. The rooms were comfortable although no natural light and not a lot of space. The bathroom is small too. But for what we paid we were fairly happy. Not sure I would recommend the hotel but like i said the location is good. Would be great for a hen do!

We had a wonderful stay. The hotel was right in the centre of the city so it was ideal for going out in the evenings and shopping during the day. The hotel was very nice and the staff very friendly and efficient.

Room was small, dirty and damp smelling, had to request a change of room from double (only had twin left) so not the romantic break that was planned. This hotel is never a 4 star accomodation, very tired looking and outdated. desparately in need of refurbishment. Not the usual standard of its other Thistle hotels. Staff are pleasant however and resturant / breakfast is great.

The hotel was very disappointing. It was meant to be a 4 star hotel, but I have stayed in a much nicer 3 star hotel in Manchester. Our room was dirty, small and tatty. It wasn't as nice as was described. The bar prices were expensive. We did complain and were told that the hotel will be getting refurbished in 2010. We would not stay there again.

Small but comfortable room, even if a little shaby. The Hotel has the feel of faded glory, fairly reflected in the discounted price we were able to obtain through ........ 3* rather than 4*.
