Very close to railway line, with windows that wouldn't close. Also, room (260) appeared to be located next to a sluice, or the neighbouring room occupant took many showers in the morning. Consequently, sleep was very difficult. Added to this, one of the duvets had holes in, and the other bed had a heavily stained matress, which when combined with minimal protection, was an unpleasant revelation when moving the pillow. Also, a strange positioning of the kettle - in a cabinet, so that the steam was captured within(?) the furniture. It was a shame that the positive elements of this victorian hotel, and the good impression of the very pleasant staff, were overridden by the shabby room.

Having just returned from the Palace Hotel, I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was extremely good and the staff very helpful. It is superbly situated in the center of Manchester and everything is at ones finger tips. Our room was very nice, impeccably clean, the beds were very comfortable and spacious. It had a slightly ecclesiastical feel to it, due to the high vaulted ceiling. Extra pillows and duvets were available in the room and everything was, as it should be in a 4 star hotel. The shower was superb, not like some hotel showers I could mention, where you are lucky to get a dribble from the shower head. Should I really want to nit pick, then the grouting on the bathroom floor needs a little attention, but this is really a minor detail. The hotel is large and as such, a veritable rabbit warren, but this is to be expected from an establishment of this size and age. It has, what very many modern establishments lack, namely charm. Naturally, there are a few problems, but one should not forget, that this place is a grade 2 listed building and not a purpose built new hotel. The views from the room are over the roof tops, but then, I did not stay here to admire the views and this is therefore immaterial. My partner and I stayed in room 5400 and we would certainly do so again.

The location of the hotel is the only saving grace of this so called 4 star hotel! The first room we were given was totally unacceptable with 2 stand alone electric heaters positioned in the middle of the room which were so woefully inadequate for the job they were supposed to do. In the corner of the room the rising damp had obviously got way out of control so we decided to ask for a room change which to the credit of the reception staff we were given straight away. The second room was a major improvement until we found out that the shower didnt work! We asked to be moved again and finally we were given a room that allowed us to be comfortable, until we found out that aircon did not work. Too tired to move again we were both so let down by the hotel on what was supposed to be a well deserved night out in a great city. Bit of advice for the Palace hotel..dont try to fob off old and tired rooms to guests when you have far more superior rooms available, I would have thought in these economically hard times repeat business would have been a priority....we however shall never return!

hotel with a personality, variety of rooms and views. handy location opposite to the railway connection to the airport. walking distance to central attractions and shopping, also fair walking distance from the universities. rooms vary a lot indeed, mine was closer to the canal while friends stayed upstairs in more historical rooms - all were comfortable, nice and well appointed. fabulous breakfast with masses of choices and nice service. architectural masterpiece.
