Hotel is clean, comfortable, very safe and in a great location

We enjoyed our stay at the Opal. Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was sufficient to start the day. Our room was average, as the window looked over to the office, so we couldn,t have the curtains opened, therefore making the room a bit dark, but it was comfortable. Handy having a little restaurant next door especially after a tiring day of sight seeing. I realize the hotel is a little old but maybe some bright furnishings in the room would modernize it a bit, but overall it was very good.

This well restored botique hotel makes a change from the big chain hotels we stayed at over 5 weeks. The location is a little out of the way but still easily assessable by public transport or walking from the main shopping area of downtown San Francisco Great traditional diners in the immediate area.

Staff very friendly & helpful, room quiet but looked into interior light well so somewhat dark, if room onto street would be very noisy so happy with this. Sheets thin & quilt patched but all very clean. Great breakfast & brewed coffee always available.

The hotel presents itself very nice and cosy. Location is good near the theater district and a 30 - 40 minutes walk from the Warf. A nice lobby and friendly staff. Continental breakfast quite good and in general was the room nice and seemed clean with a pleasent restroom. However carpets are older and we felt the beds were a "little alive" though we had no bits from bugs. Parking was much to expensive with a cost of 30 dollars a day, which in general.was the most negative experience with the hotel.

i asked for safety box, I had 2 experiences : A/ after used it a few times, I found out that I have 2 indentical forms, served by 2 different staffs. Unorganized, and I make a complain, the Deuch manager, had asked me that did I lost anything ? B/ One aged staff, opened the lid of my safety box, and look at it, right in front of me. After I took some money out...very strange.

Neighborhood has some rough edges, but everything else about this hotel is a great value. Staff is very helpful & professional; nice older hotel with REAL furniture & charm, updated and functional. Be aware that street parking may be difficult and the charge for parking is $30 per night.

Firstly the place is beautiful but slightly distressed. I like that. It's a real period peice. One thing that bothered me was parking, 36.00 a day. The staff was very nice but the first day there they confronted me about smoking in the room. I don't smoke so it was a little weird. they backed off after i told them I didn't smoke. Other than that I liked the opal. The parking would stop me from booking there in the future

The Opal is an older but very clean and comfortable property. Although the hotel is 2 - 3 miles from downtown a 10 minute cab ride is very convenient. The staff at the Opay will go out of their way to make you feel at home and meet your needs. Mel's Diner adjoins the hotel property and has a great menu variety at reasonable prices. Be sure to try their burgers and milk shakes.... mmmmmm...

It was a really good value when Hotels in the city were going for three times this amount during the Fancy Food Convention.

Overall the hotel stay was a pleasant experience, however the room had a funny smell. It's an old hotel and the room kinda smelled an old folks home but it went away for the most part after opening the window for a couple minutes. We had a King bed and the room was big enough. Bathroom was very small however, you had to close the door behind you in order to get to the sink. The continental breakfast was one of my favorite things, they had a pretty good spread. Overall it's a pretty good deal. Be prepared to pay $30 a day for hotel parking because San Fran has no parking anywhere unless its a garage or meter.

The Opal provides that 'old-time' feeling at a great price! It's a little distance from the bustling downtown, but easily accessible by bus. The staff was very friendly. The only draw-back, being an older hotel, was that you could hear your neighbor's room, but it wasn't a deterent that would keep us from re-booking for another weekend.

We'll definitely choose the Opal the next time we visit the city. Everything was great. The only minor complaint I have is that the bed was a little hard. After a few nights, I was quite sore. But the staff was very friendly and accommodating! See you all soon!

I am very glad I chose this hotel. It was my first time in San Francisco. I had planned the trip with 2 other people, but at the last minute they had to cancel and I went on my own. The hotel is located on a main street, only a few blocks from downtown. I felt safe at all times. You even need your room key to enter through the main door! If you are willing to walk around the city, don't even bother driving -traffic is insane, combine it with extremely high parking fees and tourists everywhere...!!!-. I bought a 3-day pass for $21, which allowed me unlimited rides on any of the various public means of transportation available. Great deal considering a one way ticket for the cable car is $6! There's a bus stop right in the corner of the hotel. It can't get any easier :) Anyway, my room was small, but clean and comfy. Staff was always nice and willing to help, but they didn't smile :( The continental breakfast they offer is very good and healthy enough. I would stay at this hotel again, without a doubt!

The Opal hotel was in a great location in terms of getting around SF. The room was smallish but cosy. There were homeless people in the surrounding neighborhood, but they never really bothered us. My biggest complaint was the cost of parking (around $35/night). We were able to reduce it to $25 with a AAA card.

The hotEl is quite old, with little confort: no frigidaire in rooms, showers do not work properly, the garage service not only is not free but quite expensive

Hotel was fine. Staff was nice, room was clean. The Internet worked, but would cut out a lot, even when I paid the extra $2 for the "high speed" option. The laundry room was out of service when I needed it... but that's just bad timing. There were plenty of things within walking distance, and bus routes right outside. Overall I enjoyed my stay.
