Comfortable, traditionally decorated rooms. One of the three main breakfast options had run out of fruit salad. Said I was happy to wait, then told it would take half an hour to prepare. So, I chose something else, but that is not 4* service, and I said so in a subsequent review. Management response to the review was rude and factually incorrect (when they weren't around to witness the interaction), calling me sour when I said it wasn't up to scratch! Clearly, variable customer experience.

Comfortable bed, great shower pressure, friendly staff. Old-fashioned decor (doorframe to the Annex peeling away), a little further from centre of town, but still convenient. Main gripe was that I was told at breakfast half an hour from closing time that one of the three main options, a continental breakfast (croissant, fruit salad and yoghurt), had run out of the fruit salad. When I said I was happy to wait for the fruit salad, staff member comes back to say that it would take half an hour to make up. There were apologies, but in my view, it's not acceptable for a 4* service really. I felt like I was being fobbed off. Also, concentrate orange juice rather than fresh made it less than a 4* service for me. Toiletries also felt cheap. Fine for a night and had also not paid that much, but not really my cup of tea.

The Groves is a very nice small hotel. We spent 2 nights in July '10 here and found it a very pleasant experience. There is a main building and 2 annexes with more rooms across the car park (no charge during your stay). One of our party had a 2nd floor room in the main building and the other 2 were in one of the annexes. We found that the main building room was smaller than that in the annexe but both were quite adequate for a short stay. Obviously, room sizes vary so our experience may not be typical. The breakfast choices were excellent, from a full English to a continental, as was the breakfast itself. There is a small bar, open till around 11.00pm, at normal pub prices and a lounge to relax in. Staff were all friendly, polite and very helpful. The hotel is located in a quiet side street and it's a 10-minute stroll to the city walls and Minster, 15 mins to the centre. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a short, or even a longer, stay in York.
