Travelling from NY, we soon realized that San Francisco was indeed a different city with a totally more relaxed heart beat. Having said that the fairmont hotel, a grand hotel, but showing its age. The staff were good without being imposing and the rooms were nice and large and great bathrooms. The Americans still insist on have the shower in the bath. This is old style and the sheet used to protect the water going into the room adequate. Good position to center of the shopping district and access to trams. Be prepared to walk a little as it is on top of the hill . The facilities are good and they have in house dining. Believe me you need this at times even though you may not use it, it is good to have there. They have wi fi which nowadays is a necessity and any hotel without it or they charge you for it, do not book. If you join the presidents club which is free the Internet is free. A win win I guess. Overall staff helpful when asked or requested. Hotel old and grand and good to have a tea or drink at the bar. They have a great cafe at the rear of the hotel which makes good coffee and sell great croissants. You need a good coffee in the morning, and I don't mean the American coffee which is about digestible as dry oats on a hot day. Book this hotel on line as the rack rates are more expensive. I would certainly go again. Cheers

The room was enormous and extremely comfortable, as was the hotel. My only gripe would be it would have been nice to have tea and coffee making facilites in the room. It was such a pleasure to go in and out of the hotel foyer, as young and old alike enjoyed the splendour of the Chrismas decorations and giant gingerbread house. It is well worth a visit to the Fairmont just to appreciate the the olde world feel of Christmas of a bygone era.

I tried to make a room reservation and during the process was forwarded to the concierge. I explained that we would like to take a number of tours while in San Francisco and attempted to inquire as to whether the Fairmount would recommend a particular vendor etc. I never got past the concierge. He placed me on hold three times, kept yelling into the phone that he could not hear me and when i asked to speak to someone who was not "on duty in the lobby" was rudely told that "he is the bell captain and that he needs to place me on hold again". Rather than being placed on hold for the 4th time and extending this call over the 15 minute mark (no exageration) i took my business elsewhere. If this hotel places this many roadblocks in front of a potential guest who is looking for an extended stay i can only imagine what happens when you actually get to check in......good luck.

This was a fantastic trip! The hotel is beautiful and the beds heavenly! It was a quick weekend trip so my daughter could audition for a graduate school program for Opera performance. The location to the music studio was perfect. and we had a blast exploring S.F. The ONLY downside for me was NO coffee maker in the room. I had expected that complimentary coffee would be a no brainer at such a nice hotel. I felt nickel and dimed having to pay $8 for a cup of coffee in my room.

Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

Majestic hotel at the top of the Nob Hill makes you feel you've stepped onto the set of Vertigo. Grand entrance lobby that exudes history. Friendly respectful staff with ready smiles and get you just about anything (Organic 1%/2% milk chilled, skim warm), though you'll pay dearly for the privilege. Modern typical Fairmont rooms available in the tower though a bit farm from the lobby and classic rooms in the main building. Ask for an outside facing room in the main building. It's a bit of a vertical hike to anywhere in town, though 2 cable car lines run adjacent to the property. Great views just walking around the building.

We stayed the first week of the year and things were pretty quiet except for the disassembly of the ginger bread house. Beautiful hotel with excellent service. Visited the Tonga Room to discover I am not a Mai Tai fan however the happy hour food, servers and environment was great. Will definitely stay again.

I don't want to stay in any other hotel in San Francisco moving forward . . . staying at the Fairmont was just so lovely. I went with my boyfriend over New Years weekend, and as soon as we walked in and saw the gorgeous Christmas tree in the awesome lobby, the mood was set. We were greeted by friendly staff who gave us a brief rundown of the property and history and we were upgraded to a King room (although it had an interior view, it didn't bother me). The room was spacious, clean and had a good vibe. The bathroom was clean and had a lot of space, and the mirrors and lighting were good (I get picky about this in a hotel!). One minor complaint was although the shower was great pressure-wise, it backed up a little so it didn't drain instantly. One thing to watch out for -- mini bar costs . . . I know that you should avoid them in general due to huge premium, but $8 for a small body of Evian (I was desperate!)? Also watch out for room service and parking costs (also to be expected in SF but just a heads up!). Great location. Everyone was friendly and accommodating . . . I don't know if I was in a really good mood enjoying the rare but beautiful SF weather or what, but I got a really good energy from the hotel and would definitely stay there again in the future.

I've stayed at the Fairmont a few times and this experience was quite unfortunate. The room was very, very small, and I had to listen to the guy next door snoring through the paper-thin walls for the entire evening. The lobby is gorgeous (but insanely crowded), but the noise really made for a less than pleasant stay.

I am from Berkeley and always wanted to stay at the Fairmont. It lived up to my expectations and then some, we had a great stay in our standard room which was very spacious, comfortable and lush. Valet was pricey ($54 for 24 hrs, slight discount for my hybrid to $48) but apart from that it was exactly what you would expect from a high quality hotel. The Fairmont gets very dressed up for the holidays--complete with humongous tree and a lifesize gingerbread house--very festive and stunning.

The 2-story gingerbread house was a hit with our 2 kids. Like the close proximity to Union Sq. If you are walking, the uphill hike to get back to the hotel is the price you pay for its views. Surprised there was no pool.

The hotel is lovely, and the location perfect. I had one little glitch with one Concierge - he kept looking at the computer while I was trying to ask him questions .... he was not looking for answers for me, but was distracted by something more interesting! Everything else was great! Would love to stay there again.

Beautiful historical building with a lot of character. Amazing foyer and grant interior. Decore is a little dated, and at the top of the Nob hill, it is worth getting a transport pass for the cable cars. Manager upgraded our room to King size on the upper floor while I only booked for a Queen on ground.

Already needing to be in SF, we added a few days at the front end to stay at one of the most relaxing, centrally located and beautiful hotels in the city. The bay views are phenomenal and the breakfast buffet was worth every penny!

No in-room coffee. Bed was very soft. Room was small, but typical for older hotel. Internet was $14 extra per day!
