Booked the Fairmont for a one night of luxury special trip for New Year. The hotel is impressive, with the "Castle in the City" imposing exterior and grand, imposing interior. The room however was very ordinary although we had a good view from the 8th floor. Things that soured the experience however were the incompetent and aloof staff and continuous gouging even after the expensive room rate. For example, buffet breakfast is $28 per head, parking is $32 per night and internet access is $10 for 24 hours. Tax is on top, so for example final bill for one nights parking is $47. The room was not clean in several areas - eg. I draped my black sweater over a chair and when I came to put it back on the black was now grey with dust from the back of the chair. As far as the staff, it took me more than 20 minutes to check in because there was literally no-one at the desk. Lots of staff breezed past the desk looking important and busy but didn't actually stop to check me in until I complained. When I got to the room, I called down for an extra robe for the room since there was only one (fail already) and sugar for the coffee. Neither arrived. Decided to go out instead of going to the pool as intended and mentioned the robe and sugar at the concierge downstairs. Got back to the room later and the robe had arrived but not the sugar. Called down again for the sugar, waited 20 minutes and called again. This time I got put through to the restaurant where apparently the sugar was coming from (really? the restaurant has to service room incidentals??) and was rudely told that there were several requests before mine. So nearly 3hours after my original request I was still without a cup of coffee in my room. It seems petty perhaps, but it is this kind of thing that can be really annoying when away on holiday especially in a luxury hotel. I guess being New Years Eve you have to expect noise, but being an old hotel the sound proofing is not up to modern standard, so you do run the risk of un-muffled noisy neighbors like we had. The final nail in the coffin for this place was waiting 20 minutes for our car to return from the valet parking. There was a "mix-up" apparently, none of the valet staff appeared to find it odd that people and cars were coming and going but not us. I go very regularly to Vancouver and have stayed in many places, most have provided a better experience for less money.

We stayed two days in the gold level rooms. Excellent service and accommodations. We really felt pampered the entire time we were there. I highly recommend the Gold level rooms since it comes with a wonderful breakfast and free amenities like wifi. Close to lots of public transportation.

The new, now old, auto debit mini bars put an end to my esteem for this hotel. Otherwise, very welcoming all around and very good lunch buffet in the restaurant downstairs.

This was the most completely satisfying hotel experience we've had. The swimming pool was a great surprise, because I wasn't expecting one in a hotel such as this. The room upgrade (for my wife's birthday) was another pleasant surprise. EXCELLENT on all counts.

The true quiet and peacefulness of elegance. This hotel takes service to a new level, and the prices offered by this website are awesome. Do not forget to have your coins ready for the porters, and pet the house Golden Retriever who lives to entertain you in the Lobby; you can even take him for a walk. Beyond luxuriating in the wealth of the facilities, I achieved a great deal of work. They truly support the business traveler as well as the escapee from the maddening world. Thanks.
