The Baldwin Hotel San Francisco

The hotel has a very good location with walking distance to China Town, Union square, restaurants, cable car, BART(Montgomery Station). Staff are friendly and helpful. There is a little bit difficult to open the door with room key, and the key is very expensive if you lost it.

The staff were very accommodating and friendly. I had asked for a quiet room (far from the elevator) when I reserved and they delivered. The room is large enough and was clean. The flat-screen TV worked well, the shower was great (hot, voluminous) and the bed was firm -- which I like -- but a bit lumpy. Sheets are changed every two days, which is fine by me. No risk of needing to call down for more toilet paper or Kleenex; extras provided in the room. The steam radiator heating system is noisy, though my room was comfortable. Each day there was a clever "folded towel animal" (Iike Origami with towels) on the bed. Truly, a unique touch. Great value, great location. I'm definitely coming back.

First off the location was great, however as soon as we got there- NO parking of their own, its a 2 block off site parking lot thats $25 a day. Then walking in, NO bellmen, NO one to help you with your bags upstairs. The Hotel claimed u can get a queen size bed, however, they fail to mention its $20 PER night for a small queen! So we slept in their full bed in which we couldnt even move! The shower made noises all night, the room was the size of a normal bathroom but the Worst part was the staff!! There was a female working there that was a huge b****! No one there was polite or courteous and was just overall unbelievably rude! I would write it all down but it was way to much! I mean honestly, if you are a boutique hotel wouldn't you want to treat your guests with the utmost courteous and welcoming attitude? Considering people will write reviews and would rather stay at a nicer hotel thats a chain and with people who are polite! Basically rooms r way to small (fine if you are alone) and staff is awful!!!!! But overall a nice location- only good thing about this hotel!!

The hotel is in a great location in the city, close to major transportation and attractions and right in front of the Chinatown gate. The location is very convenient and the neighborhood is clean and quiet at night. The room was clean and comfortable with basic amenities, good enough for us who don't have a lot of needs. The staff was very helpful and friendly and we felt at ease staying at this hotel. We highly recommend this hotel for a comfortable and affordable stay in San Francisco.

Room was small but recently renovated. Located close to everything downtown, especially Chinatown. No breakfast, but the Working Girls Cafe in the next street parallel was great (also try the Banana House Thai restaurant in the same street where we went back 3 times to each for cheap and tasty food.)

No frills, but clean. It's advertised as being on Union Square so I was surprised that it's right below the main entrance to China Town on Grant Street. The room was clean but bare bones. The TV is set at an angle to the bed and the remote can't be taken off the head board. It was pretty uncomfortable watching TV lying cross wise on the bed. The hotel is quiet and very safe. The staff was polite but not personable. No particular personality to the hotel either. The best feature is that it's located within walking distance of where I want to go while in SF.

Like everybody seems to say, the location is perfect. The hotel staff are truly helpful and know the area well. The room I was in was very comfortable, had charming ambiance, was very clean, and was very quiet. I was a little nervous when I found out the room had no air-conditioning; however, there was absolutely no need for it, although it was September (typically the warmest month of the year). When I visit San Francisco again I will DEFINITELY stay at the Baldwin Hotel again!

This trip was strictly for pleasure and The Baldwin Hotel was utilized for sleeping only. The staff were all very pleasant and knowledgable about the area. The rooms were just right for two people. One drawback was that the area was somewhat noisy in the middle of the night with garbage pickups going on at about 3:30AM. The Hotel was just a few blocks from much pricier hotels so we felt that we got a good deal and were able to easily walk to Union Square and other attractions close by. We purchased a 3-day bus pass that cost $21 and included the bus lines as well as the Trolley. This was a great deal and made it very easy to get around the city. We pre-booked tickets to Alcatraz and were glad because the entire month of August was sold out. We ended up renting a car for the last two days to go to Muir Woods and Sonoma, which you don't want to miss. There are some tours that go there as well, but we enjoyed the freedom to come and go. The rental worked out well because we picked up the car at the airport and then were able to return the car there when we needed to catch our flight - ended up being very convenient.

Great location, centrally located to restaurants, retail stores, public transportation; took a couple of tours, but saw the main features of the city by using cable car, buses, and trolleys. the hotel is small and very old, but the rooms have been renovated. the tub is an old, claw, foot tub, with a shower attached. need to be careful getting in and out, since tub is two ft. off the floor. staff at hotel very helpful, will book the tours, and shedule airport transportation, if needed.we would stay there again, but would ask for another room, since ours, the 701 is right next to the elevator, and there was quite a bit of mechanical noise throughout the evenings.

This has to be the best kept secret in San francisco. Was a bit unsure about staying here as it is a smaller hotel, but after reading all the reviews I decided to book it, because there were no bad reviews, all good. was able to check in straight away when I arrived from my flight from Melbourne at 11am. A block and a half from Union square, half block from China Town gates. About a 5 minute walk to trams and cable cars for getting to the bay are and fishermans wharf. No firdges available, but staff were to happy to keep my medication in their staff fridge for me while I stayed there. Hotel staff were fantastic and every night when I returned to my room there were little creatures made out of the towles etc. on my bed. Nice little touch. I would definatley stay here again. The room was suprisingly large aswell.

I thought this was a very comfortable hotel at much better prices than usual in San Francisco. The location is very convenient to BART and therefore to the airport. Right at the Chinatown gate and close to Union Square and North Beach. The room was big, the bed comfortable and the free wifi worked perfectly. It's a rather noisy area at night but I expect that in a downtown area. The only problem I had with the room was I could not adjust the heat and had to open windows to cool the place down. I would stay definitely here again.

Some of the rooms in the Baldwin Hotel are alongside an alley that is used for garbage collection and storage of recycling bins. If you like sleeping with the window open, be prepared to hear glass being disposed off by the various bars/restaurants very late at night. These recycling bins are picked up every morning around 6:00 AM(except weekends), requiring 2 or 3 trucks to back-up (with the typical beeper echoing in the alley) to collect the contents of the bins. The end of the alley is a facing a parking garage (typically 1 or 2 car alarms seem to go off spontaneously each night). It takes a few nights to get used to this. For the rest the hotel is fine. Complementary coffee is available til late at night.

No frills hotel in a good location - just in front of the China gate. The room and bathroom were clean but the towels had black stains (twice). The heating pipes were quite loud and you can also easily hear people in other guest rooms. However, the price/value is unbeatable.

Great value for money. It's an older hotel, but has been renovated/refurbished. Very quiet. Location just a few steps to Chinatown, and only 2 or 3 blocks to union square. Would have been nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but that's only a small reservation. Highly recommended, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
