The Andrews Hotel San Francisco
2 out of 5

The hotel is old and atmospheric ... I guess. It is also cramped, smelly and with poor facilities. For example, the toilet is squeezed into a place so small that one cannot readily adopt a seated position if greater than 5ft tall. Why scarred for life? Well the sound insulation is non existent. On one of the nights I was lying in bed hearing and endless stream of Frank Sinatra Christmas songs wafting up from below (presumably being played at an open window in a lower room) whilst from up above came the sounds of rhythmic squeaking, slapping and screaming. I don't think I will ever listen to Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer in the same way again. It was beyond surreal.

Out of the way, but nice staff, great restaurant. Cab ride to Mocone varied between 5 and 9 dollars. Nice little restaurants in neighborhood.

Enjoyed our stay with mostly helpful staff. One problem either a boiler or hot water pipes ran behind wall behind bedhead and room was a bit like a sauna so depends on weather when staying in this particular bedroom position. Breakfast was minimal but did get us started for the day. Position was very handy to Union Square and public transport and the Hop On Hop Off buses only a short walk away. Adjoining restaurant was good quality and friendly staff at reasonable prices. Lift old and small but easier than stairs. No fridge but ice available. Hotel position made getting to tourist attractions fairly easy using public transport.

I did not stay...the neighborhood scared me away, a charge for parking...that was in the fine print..my mistake...try to get a refund....that was not going to happen.... the safety of my car was the main problem..the hotel is in the worst part of the city...bums and garbage everywhere...could not get refund because I did not cancel 40 hrs before... well I flew in and picked up rental car, then headed to hotel....Comfort Inn is couple miles away and has secure parking... Im afraid I will not be using Cheaptickets any more either....there are to many other booking agencies that protect the customer from stuff like this.

The breakfast was served on 2/F and 3/F corridor. I walked out to get my pastries at 8:30am but the basket was empty already. I called down to front desk, the lady said each room is only entitled to 2 pastries and someone might have taken more than 2 so nothing left, and there is NO replacement if basket is empty. I was SHOCKED at this, 8:30am and all breakfast is GONE. Super upset about this. They did not tell guests to just take 2 pieces per room I think, that's why ppl stock up their breakfast leaving nothing to the others and it is ridiculous to prepare just enough quantity without any replacement.

Two blocks off Union Square, this old (pre-earthquake) hotel retains the charm of an earlier era. A nice feature is the continental breakfast put out on each floor: juice, rolls, butter, jam, fruit, coffee, tea; put on tray and take to your room. There is wireless internet, but it broke down for over a day while I was there. There is no coffee maker in the room; there is coffee in the lobby at all times, but it is stale and hardly warm. The rooms are definitely on the small side. But great value and location. I've stayed there eight or ten times.

I was close to choosing some other hotels I had never been to or had confidence in their services. The Andrews came up as a last choice but the reviews were good. I hope this synopsis of my queen comfy room will help you. Let me start by saying that I would stay here again. Price Versus Comfort are excellent. 1. you will get a clean room, bath / shower, small flat screen television, dvd player, alarm clock, iron and hair dryer and ceiling fan. 2. The room is clean 3. The location is good for Union Square 4. THe complimentary Breakfast is good ( fresh fruit, breads, coffee and juice) 5. THe Fino Restaurant is great food and great staff 6. THe elevator is small and older with a retracting gate but it works and is quaint 7. THe stairwell from floor to floor is tight and steep so if you are older or physically challenged the elevator is your way 8. Easy to find off of Post street 9. Neighborhood is just fine THe one negative I had was an unexpected 50.00 a day deposit for the room charged upon arrival. I had not known about this and at a four day stay, this was 200.00 extra dollars I had to spend up front. You are credited during checkout but knowing about this earlier would have helped me prepare. If I come into a great amount of money then I would stay at the JW Marriott, Hyatt or Westin, but for a good price, in a good location you won't beat the Andrews. I will stay here again!!!

I loved it! Close to shopping, dining and bars. Hotel had that old charm feel, small room but that is what you get in San Fran.

After staying at some of the expensive hotels in Union Square we ran across the Andrews. The price was much better and they exceeded our expectations at every point. Breakfast, Wi-Fi, and evening wine were all included. The room was smaller than a new modern hotel but it was more than adequate. It was clean and comfortable for two people.

Andrews hotel was way better than I expected. The staff was very helpful in everything, they held our bags for the entire day after we checked out and went to roam the city. The continental breakfast was delicious, the pastries fresh and various.there was always water, fruit and tea in the lobby, also we could have a complimentary glass of wine in the hotel restaurant. The room was small, but convinient and honestly I expected it to ve way smaller and crammier. The con is thou that there was no Ac,bbut provided the weather we didnt need it at all. Overall the stay at Andrews was a pure pleasure, and the saved money was spent on other fun things instead on the chain expensive hotel.

What a great deal! The hotel is located in a fabulous area in the City. The hotel offers a great breakfast each morning and the evening glass of wine was a great way to end every day. We will definitely stay here again soon!

The staff was friendly. My transpacific flight was delayed in Hong Kong and reached SF at 1.00am. The staff on duty greeted me by my name on my entering the hotel, and said he was expecting me. The other staff are all very friendly. the only thing that i mised was a kettle in the room to boil hot water to make my own coffee and tea. Anyway, coffee and tea and water was available in the check-in area downstairs, but it was troublesome that everytime you need to drink, you need to go down stairs, since thee rooms are all on upper levels. One thing i like about the hotel is the breakfast. Although it was basic, with croissants, buns , coffee, tea, fruits and juice, it was spread out in every floor, and you can just choose your food and bring it inside your room to eat. Overall, i would say it is a great hotel, vlue for money, good location and i would certainly stay in that hotel again.

It's a classy old building with a great history behind it. There's a lovely bar/restaurant called Fino on the premises, well worth a visit. Our double room on the 4th floor was nice, but rather small, and breakfast is served out on the corridors which was convenient. I would recommend it, but beware if you have a vehicle - will cost you at least $25 per night

My only complaint was that my telephone in my room was not working unbeknown to me and when advised by my sister from Australia, who was trying to contact me, that she was concerned as I had not returned their call and would they mind checking, their response was that they were busy and were at the moment serving breakfast. This I found unsatisfactory. The matter was the phone was not ringing in my room and reception knew I was in as they advises my sister that they had seen me come in. The phone was subsequently changed as it was faulty
