Popular Destinations near Hua Hin
Favourite Cities and Hotels in Thailand

The first venerable beach resort destination in Thailand, if not all of Southeast Asia, Hua Hin is still a premier tropical paradise. The city of 85,000 people has a strong link to the first family of Thailand, with the permanent residence of His Majesty the King on the coast. The idyllic seaside location of the Wang Klai Kang Won royal palace, open to the public by special appointment, discloses in plain fashion that Hua Hin is truly fit for a king.

Outside of occasional tropical rains from June to October, the weather on the Malay Peninsula, some 200 km south of the smog and congestion of Bangkok, is perfect. Hua Hin Beach is the obvious attraction of first resort but others do abound, from the lively night market to dramatic hilltop Buddhist temples. A number of festivals and cultural events dot the calendar, most of which take place on the beach.

    Heavenly Hua Hin

Calling all resort lovers… If you want a Thailand beachside holiday where it actually feels like you’re in Thailand, put Hua Hin on your to-do list. ‘Discovered’ by Thai king Rama VII in the 1920s, this dreamlike sanctuary 200km (125 miles) from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok is the place Thailand’s elite come to relax. ... Read more »

Those royal connections remain strong. The king’s permanent residence, Klai Kangwon Palace, is here. Although it isn’t open to visitors, you can still walk around the outer palace grounds – just make sure you wear closed shoes and long pants and you bring your passport.

Hua Hin used to be a tiny fishing village but has since been completely transformed into a seriously lavish resort town. Zealous beachgoers will be delighted by the breadth – in every sense – of beaches to choose from. From the iconic Hua Hin Beach to smaller, sleepier beaches at Sam Roi Yot National Park, there’s something for everyone. So get your sunscreen ready!

Whether you’re after golf courses, night markets, or just some resting and relaxing, Hua Hin knows how to show you a good time, but without the hedonistic excesses. That’s not to say the resort is patronised by the Amish. You can still swig on freshly brewed beer at the Hua Hin Brewing Company at The Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, it’s just that the seediness of other Thai resorts is refreshingly absent.

Hua Hin is about tranquility, not transvestites. So if relaxation floats your boat, you’ll love it here.

    HUA HIN’S TOP 10

    10. Namtok Pa La-u Waterfall at the Kaengkrajan National Park. Although 60km from Hua Hin, it’s worth getting up early to see the butterflies in the morning.

    5. Banyan Golf Club Golfers will have a field day in Hua Hin. The world-class Banyan Golf Club is exactly that.

    9. Sam Roi Yot National Park With its limestone mountains, beaches, mangrove swamps and caves, it’s a must-see.

    4. Hua Hin Hills Vineyard Yes, a vineyard in Thailand! Sounds kinda crazy, but it’s really not. You explore the vineyard on elephant back –now that’s crazy!

    8. Wat Khao Takiap is a hilltop temple on Khao Takiap hill, commanding a wonderful view of Hua Hin.

    3. Hua Hin Railway Station was rebuilt in 1968. It’s Thailand’s most beautiful train station and used to be a royal pavilion.

    7. Hutsadin Elephant Foundation It’s free, but donations are used to take care of the elephants.

    2. Klai Kangwon Palace The Royal Family regularly stays here in the warmer months. You’re not allowed to go inside (unless you have some special permit), but have a look from outside anyway!

    6. Hua Hin Safari & Adventure Park Get your adrenaline pumping Thai style, with elephant treks, horse rides, paint ball or ATV (all-terrain vehicle) adventures all on offer.

    1. Hua Hin Beach Miles of white sandy beach. Take your pick from water sports, swimming, or just simply relaxing on one of the lounges.

    HUA HIN EAT & DRINK

In Hua Hin, there’s a wide variety of cuisines on offer. And since it used to be a fishing village, it’s no surprise that you’ll find a whole lot of seafood here.

Baan Isara Frequented by locals, you know you’re getting authentic – and fantastic – Thai food here.

Margaritas Mexican food in Thailand? The owner is actually Texan, which explains why the Tex Mex food here works so well.

Ketsarin Restaurant Thai and European food served by the water on a pier. Don’t expect too much from the décor because this restaurant is all about the seafood!

Moon Smile & Platoo This small restaurant is the busiest on the block, and for good reason. The Thai food is authentic and full of flavour.

Prime Restaurant A classy dining spot that uses top-quality imported ingredients for its International menu. There’s also a cocktail bar – martinis, here we come!

Brasserie de Paris French cuisine in a romantic setting. Perfect if you’re after some French onion soup!

Sasi Dinner Theatre You’re likely to forget that you’re here for dinner because you’ll be so enticed by the entertainment. Expect to be wowed by Thai Mask Dance, Ramayana and Thai martial arts.

Oceanside Beachclub & Restaurant The stylish beachside venue offers Thai and Mediterranean.

La Grappa is a contemporary Italian restaurant run by chef Andreas Bonifacio (who has Michelin star restaurants, just FYI). Sip on a Grappa and top things off with a genuine Cuban cigar.

Orchids Whoever said that Thai and French don’t go together was lying. At Orchids you’ll enjoy Thai and French fusion food, prepared with fresh and organic ingredients.

    HUA HIN EVENTS

From March to April, Thailand’s International Kite Festival displays everything kite-related, from stunt kites to traditional Thai kites. The festival only runs every other year.

Every year in June, Hua Hin holds the Hua Hin Jazz Festival, drawing first-rate jazz musicians from all over the world. If you’ve never experienced jazz on the beach before, this is the perfect time to see it!

The Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally is an annual event that features a procession of over 60 antique and classic cars. The December rally starts in Bangkok and finishes at the Sofitel Central Hua Hin Resort. On the last day you can join in the fun at the 1920s gala.

    WHEN TO GO

Temperatures stay pretty constant (generally around 30°C/86°F) all year round in Hua Hin. The only seasonal changes you’ll encounter are rain or sun!

    · The hottest it gets in Hua Hin is around March to May, so pack your bathing suit because you’re likely to spend most your days in it.

    · From June to October, the rainy season makes it almost unbearably humid and sticky. An umbrella might also come in handy.

    · Hua Hin is coolest from November to February. And with cool we don’t meant winter-cool. It’s more like a 25-degrees (77°F) kind-of-cool.

    GETTING THERE AND AROUND

You can choose from taking a car, bus or train to Hua Hin from Bangkok. It’s about a three hour drive. There used to be daily flights, but they were discontinued indefinitely in 2010.

Around Hua Hin, you can hail down one of the songthaws (baht buses), which cost a mere 10 baht. Otherwise there are motorcycle taxis, tuk tuks, and samlors (rickshaws) at your service. It’s also possible to rent a motorbike or a car (though car rentals are not as common as motorbikes). Traffic can be quite bad and driving in general can get very chaotic. Renting a vehicle is only suitable for those who are feeling brave and confident.

    WHAT TO MISS

    · Watch out for the tailor shops where overpricing is all the rage. Unless you’re an expert at bargaining, get clothes made in another part of Thailand.

    · Avoid the beach at high tide – it gets to the point when you practically can’t see the beach anymore!

    · Tuk tuks can be way overpriced. Either bargain or settle for another means of transport.
