The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the most sacred Buddhist shrine in Thailand. The monument dates back to the late 18th century and is notable for its vast ensemble of highly ornamental motifs and curiously, the lack of a monastery. As such, Wat Phra Kaew is peerless and a tribute to the flourish of spiritual artistic expression under the reign and patronage of King Rama I from 1782 to 1809. Of all the inherent details to decorate the temple complex, the 45 cm-tall Emerald Buddha is by far the most venerable.
Vitals and Tips
The Emerald Buddha is made of green jade and as legend has it, was made in India in the year 43 B.C.
The Grand Palace covers some 21.84 hectares and serves as the official residence of the Thai royal family. In addition to the palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the compound also contains many government offices.
The palace complex is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
