Dar es Salaam General Information

Though not the official capital of Tanzania anymore – Dodoma has held the title since 1996 – Dar es Salaam is the undeniable pulse point of the country and outside of Nairobi, Kenya, the commercial heart of East Africa. The city is notably eclectic, with a social and cultural fabric that is part African, part Arabic and part Indian. This fusion bleeds into the music, cuisine, architectural landscape and spirit of Dar es Salaam and captivates unwary visitors. The city is a natural seaport and as a result, serves a vital economic role for not just Tanzania, but for Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well. So while visitors may have to escape to far-flung suburbs for beach bliss, the good news is that Dar has coastal gems galore. Within the city proper, countless quality restaurants, nightclubs and bars abound. Points of interest to consider include the National Museum, Village Museum and Kunduchi Ruins.
