Zermatt, Switzerland, is an alpine paradise and perfect retreat for skiers and snowboarders with some cash to spare, as it is also one of the most expensive places to lodge in the Alps. This is because it has the best ski conditions in Northern Europe almost 364 days year-round. Most people visit Zermatt to ski, snowboard, hike, climb or mountain bike. The famous MatterhornandBreithornmountains are located in Zermatt. Fit and experienced climbers may enjoy the challenge of Monte Rosa, and the Monterosa Ski areais perfect for skiers of all levels. If you are a beginner or need some refresher instruction, you can attend the different ski schools in Zermatt. Bikers will enjoy the rugged trails of Zermatt, but you need to know which lifts can accommodate your bike, and Sunnegga and Schwarzsee are among the bike-friendly lifts. The Gornergrat Railway is a mountain train that you can use for sightseeing or accessing the slopes, and it accommodates bikes as well. While you may go to Zermatt for action on the slopes, you will likely want to take a break at Papperla Pub. The Vernissage is a disco bar and theatre where you can party or watch films.

When to Go

Since Zermatt is situated well above sea level in the Alps, the temperature ranges from chilly to cold most of the year. The area does have seasonal changes, however. The summer months may experience highs in the lower 20s C (upper 60s to lower 70s F), and it can drop as low as -10°C (14°F) in the winter. While it is possible to ski year-round, skiers and snowboarders can find the best conditions from the fall until spring. Those who enjoy hiking and horseback riding will enjoy Zermatt in warmer months.

Getting There

Visitors can charter a flight into Zermatt from one of the major Swiss airports, but the cost is quite high. Most people come into Zermatt using the train. The Swiss Transfer Ticket is the least expensive fare option available through the Swiss Federal Railway. Note that Zermatt is car-free, and considering this town has only five or six roads, it makes sense. You can walk or take solar electric taxis, cable cars and buses to get around. Cars are only allowed as far as Täsch, which is 7 km (4.3 mi) away, and you will need to take a bus or train for the last leg if your trip is to Zermatt. The police will fine you heavily if you try to drive into Zermatt.
