A small town of less than 7,000 people, Stromstad has a long history and is notable as a gateway to Norway. The border is a mere 25 km from Stromstad and, as a result, the municipality is notoriously popular because of Sweden’s lower taxes on alcohol. With Oslo about a 90 minute drive away, countless cars from Norway flood Stromstad on weekends and holidays to stock up on hard liquor at the local Systembolaget - Sweden’s government-run alcohol retail chain. There are other reasons to visit Stromstad of course, from the Stromstad Golfklubb to the Stromstad Museum. The Vitlycke Museum and UNESCO World Heritage Rock Carvings in Tanum comprise perhaps the best attraction in all of Västra Götaland County. Others include the Lödöse Museum, Friluftsmuseet, Kosterhavet National Park and Tresticklan National Park.

Stromstad is relatively quiet on the nightlife front. For a real bar and club scene, the best bet is to drive north to Oslo or south to Gothenburg.
