Located in northern Spain, Santander is a coastal city packed with festivals, art, culture, history and leisure activities. As the capital of the province Cantabria, Santander is very accessible from other parts of Spain as well as major cities in Europe. The city itself is also quite accessible, as the distance from one end to another is around 6 km (4 miles), and the attractions in the city centre are all within a short walking distance. The most popular tourist attraction is the Palacio de la Magdalena, where the Spanish royalty used to holiday in the early 1900s. There are a number of fascinating museums, including the Museo Taurino (Bullfighting Museum), Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes (Municipal Museum of Arts) and Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueología de Cantabria (Prehistoric and Archaeological Museum of Cantabria).

Enjoy a walk along the Paseo de Pereda y Calle Castelar, a long street in the city centre with nice harbour views and buildings from the 18th-20th century. Visit the popular Catedral de Santa Maria de la Asunción, which offers free guided tours in July and August. There is no shortage of beaches if you are looking to relax in the sunshine, including the popular Playa del Sardinero, Playa de la Magdalena, Playa de los Bikinis and Playa los Peligros.

When To Go

Santander’s climate is humid, sometimes reaching more than 90 per cent humidity. Average daily temperatures vary from the 20s Celsius (70s Fahrenheit) during the summer months, and 10-20°C (50-68°F) in the winter. Most travellers find that Santander is a great holiday spot to visit all year round, and that no matter the season; there is always something to do.

Getting There

The International Airport of Santander has mostly domestic and charter flights, although international flights from London, Dublin, Rome and others are offered. The airport is located in Camargo, which is close to Santander.

The ALSA offers daily bus services to Santander from various cities such as Galicia, Asturias, Zaragoza and Barcelona. Weekly service is also offered from France, the United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland and Belgium.

Santander can be reached from Plymouth, England, by ferry. The voyage will take about 24 hours each way. The Brittany Ferries operate two rides per week from the UK to Santander from mid-March to October.
