Carabanchel is a famous neighbourhood of Madrid. The suburb south west of the cosmopolitan capital city came to prominence as a fierce battleground in 1936, the first year of the Spanish Civil War. Political prisoners from the Spanish Civil War later built the most infamous prison in the country in the heart of Carabanchel, from 1940 to 1944. Carabanchel Prison was a powerful symbol of General Francisco Franco’s brutal regime and for decades, held some of the most famous inmates in the country. Upon closure in 1998, the austere penal complex became a blank canvas of sorts, especially for intrepid and creative graffiti artists. In spite of fervent protests, the local government tore down Carabanchel Prison in 2008 to make way for new residential developments.
Vitals and Tips
Carabanchel is one of the most diverse ethnic enclaves in Spain, with significant immigrant populations from North Africa, South America and Eastern Europe. The district contains many fine markets, shops and restaurants.
The Madrid neighbourhood is accessible via Line 5 of the Madrid Metro (Eugenia de Montijo, Carabanchel, Vista Alegre stations).
