Popular Destinations near Lanzarote Island
Favourite Cities and Hotels in Spain

About 125 km off the Atlantic coast of Africa sits the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Of volcanic origin, the entire island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that drew the attention of Pliny the Elder as far back as two millenia ago. Timanfaya National Park in southwest Lanzarote, covers over 50 km² of land and contains volcanic geysers that remain very popular with tourists. The first resorts on the island were built around the town of Tías, the notable home of 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature recipient, José de Sousa Saramago of Portugal.

Arrecife has been the capital of Lazarote since 1852. A port town of just over 50,000 people, Arrecife contains a popular beach and harbor and is the main point of entry for many tourists to the island. Resorts on the coast of course, are why people come to Lanzarote. The main destinations for prime beach time are Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Luscious Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one seriously popular tourist destination. Which isn’t surprising considering it’s one of the beautiful Canary Islands and is basically lush terrain surrounded by sea and sprinkled with fiestas and great attractions. But that does mean it is hardly the place to go for some R&R. So instead, go to Lanzarote for everything else.

Daredevils can enjoy a parasail at Puerto Calero, while shopaholics should max out their credit cards at the Biosfera Shopping Centre. But Lanzarote is not a complete cultural wasteland, with the Museum of Immigration full of fascinating stories from the earliest settlers.

In the end, though, it all comes back to the setting. And to see the island at its finest, climb to the 475m-high Mirador del Rio lookout, peer down on the tourists and think, ‘Well, I can’t beat ’em, so I may as well join ’em’!

Lanzarote’s Top 10

10. Museum of Agriculture Educate yourself on farming and the traditional way of living at this charming museum.

5. Teguise The town is over 600 years old. Walk around and take a gander at the history-rich architecture.

9. La Geria Wine country! Sip Lanzarote’s finest drops at the various bodegas.

4. Calle Real Iconic brands and luxe, up-market labels are at this mega-mall. Grab the Euro and go.

8. Rancho Texas Park Be greeted by saloon girls and cowboys on horseback. Kitschy fun.

3. Puerto del Carmen Forget Ibiza, this is the #1 party town!

7. Arrecife The island’s capital is home to great restaurants and boutiques.

2. Playa Grande Lanzarote’s biggest beach is the place to show off that rockin’ bod and get your snorkel on.

6. Papagayo A stunning beach. Expect to see several birthday suits. Those saucy Spaniards!

1. Atlantida Tunnel The longest volcanic tunnel in the world is home to the Cueva de los Verdes, a magical cave filled with mineral and rock formations.

Lanzarote History

  • Castillo de las Coloradas – Located near the beaches at Papagayo, this castle was constructed around 1769.
  • Monumento Al Campesino – A celebration and illustration of Lanzarote’s rural roots.
  • Fundación César Manrique – César Manrique's superb house, constructed inside five volcanic bubbles.
  • Timanfaya National Park Visitors' Centre – A permanent display of the origins of the island and its recent volcanic activity.
  • Palacio Spinola – A beautiful 1730s house museum providing rich insight into architecture of the period.

Lanzarote Art & Culture

  • Agricola Museum – Home to agriculture exhibits, including tools, implements and plans of a typical household layout.
  • Whales and Dolphins Museum – An informative museum, ideal for family holiday trips to Lanzarote.
  • Museum El Tanit – A fascinating ethnographic museum, home to a collection of everyday items from island life over the last 200 years.
  • LagOmar – A house built for the film star Omar Sharif in the 1970s.
  • Wine Museum – Learn more about viniculture on Lanzarote at this museum.

  • Deiland – Based in Playa Honda, this shopping centre caters mainly to locals.
  • Arrecife – Arrecife’s central shopping zone.
  • Teguise Market – Held every Sunday, this street market is the biggest and best known in Lanzarote.
  • Costa Teguise Market – This small-scale market sells arts and crafts on Thursdays and bags, jewellery and souvenirs on Fridays.

Gay & Lesbian Lanzarote

  • Punto – A disco bar in Puerto del Carmen perfect for fun nights out and cool drinks with friends.
  • WAX Sports and Lounge Bar – Located in Playa Blanca, this bar attracts locals and tourists.
  • Flanagans Showbar – This Puerto del Carmen comedy drag bar guarantees laughs from start to finish.
  • The Lively Lady Show Bar – Featuring drag shows and karaoke, this is Costa Teguise's only show bar.
  • Niki Beach – A gay-friendly nightclub that offers a holiday spirit.

Lanzarote Outdoor

  • Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire) – Located within the Timanfaya National Park, this volcanic landscape is the highlight of many tourists’ trips.
  • Cueva de los Verdes (Greens Cave) – A succession of caverns and tunnels created by an underground river of lava.
  • Cactus Garden – A celebration of the plant world's spiniest of species.
  • Guinate Tropical Park – Home to 1,300 exotic bird and animal species, as well as planted botanical gardens.
  • Rancho Texas Wild West Park – A great theme park catering to younger Lanzarote tourists.

Lanzarote Sport

  • Watch Union Deportiva Lanzarote football club at their home ground, the Ciudad Deportiva.
  • Be in awe at the strength of the participants of the La Santa Ironman competition held in May each year.
  • Catch the athletes taking part in Las Tres Islas, typically held a week or two following the Ironman event.

Lanzarote Events

The Arrecife Carnival from February to March is a big explosion of fun. Dust off your dancing shoes and give the locals a run for their money.

The mother of all street parades is brought to you by the Teguise Carnival in March. Keep an eye out for the slightly spooky ‘Dance of the Devil’…

Hundreds put their athletic prowess on show at the annual Ironman Lanzarote in May. Come and watch the fitness freaks swim, cycle and run.

The Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen in mid-July celebrates the saint with parades, parties and general hubbub. Olé!

September brings the Our Lady of Sorrows Festival, with its colourful parade and huge folk-style carnival and craft market.

When To Go

  • Lanzarote’s summer temps are heavenly. With a constant flow of 29°C (84°F) days, you’ll be perfectly tanned in no time.
  • Rain is inevitable in December and January, but there’s still plenty of sun given the average winter temperature is a balmy 23°C (73°F).

Getting Around

  • The Arrecife Bus Service trawls the entire island, but timetables aren’t exactly accurate and the service is infrequent. If you like your exploration to be well organised, this probably isn’t the way to go.
  • Bikes can be hired from all over the town (including hotels). With a bunch of dedicated cycling lanes, a bike tour could be the ideal way to see the sights.
  • If you want to enjoy the lush landscapes and greenery on the island’s outskirts, a cheap hire car is your best bet.
