Favourite Cities and Hotels in Spain

Ibiza Island earns a thumbs up and perhaps a swing of the hips for its worldwide reputation as one of the best places to party in Europe. Part of Spain's Balearic Islands, Ibiza offers nightlife marked by pure hedonism. Rivalling any cosmopolitan club, expect nothing less rambunctious when you enter the clubs of Ibiza Island.

More outlandish than its neighbours in the Balearics, Ibiza Island does entertain in other ways apart from its busy nocturnal schedule and tons of water sports on offer. Sightseeing can take you to small charming towns, breathtaking cliffs, calm forests, secluded coves and more stunning features. Certainly worth leaving the party scene even just for a brief moment.

If you're not keen on joining the fray during the hot season, winter breaks are just as popular as summer holidays in Ibiza Island. There are fun-filled activities with which to enjoy your stay and the wild atmosphere has given way to a more peaceful climate.

Holidays in Ibiza Island mean beach-hopping in the day and partying until late at night. Though the rapid rise of commercial developments has made an impact in the landscape of the island, the coast still offers a good amount of beach life! Do remember that beyond the tourist trail, there are some sleepy towns and secret coves worth taking a look at.

The best known spots are Es Cavallet, Figueretes and Ses Salines which are accessible from Ibiza town. The old quarter of Ibiza town is also a good sightseeing stop with its cobblestone streets and gothic buildings. There are special secluded beaches as well if you're looking for a different kind of fun in the sun. Head north of the island to get to Aigues Blanques, the popular nudist beach and Cala Llonga, all just a ferry away from Eulalia del Rio (in which you'll find the bustling hippie community of Sant Carles).

San Antonio is another touristy town rapidly caught in the concrete maze of bars, cafes and apartment blocks. It is also one of the busiest clubbing areas in Ibiza Island as it is home to famous Café del Mar and Es Paradis Club. Similarly, Playa d'En Bossa is a hive of nightly entertainment for all ages.

Christmas, New Year and Lenten periods witness many religious events in Ibiza Island. Feast days of Catholic saints are also celebrated with traditional colourful parades, songs and dances.

In February, Ibiza Island gets in fiesta mode for the Carnival. There are giant floats, dancers, mascots and endless revelry in the streets just like the carnival in Brazil or in any other Latin American city.

The festival of Saint Joan draws in crowds to witness fireworks, music and street parties every year in June. For shopaholics, the Hippy Markets held during the peak months of April to October is a treasure trove of souvenirs, novelties, ethnic wares and other local goods.

Ibiza Island gets down to serious business to fuel the clubbing frenzy from June to September with different DJs spinning the night away, all seven days a week!

  • Winter (December to February) 5-14°C; quite chilly but but still sunny

Incredible Ibiza

The Spanish island of Ibiza came to international prominence in the groovy ’60s, when Europe’s hippies needed a place to rest their weary heads on hemp pillows. Ibiza has since become a mainstay for holidaymakers and partygoers – although the musical styles have changed a bit… ... Read more »

Not that Ibiza’s party lifestyle has completely swamped its sense of culture. Visit the Es Cana Hippy Market to capture your inner flower child, or visit the famous Bar Anita, where many a literary figure has been inspired on a bar stool. The Cova de Can Marca cave system, meanwhile, is a favourite for international spelunkers.

And yes, there are countless options for going out and getting down. If you want a quiet holiday, you don’t want Ibiza, so embrace your glow-stick-wielding inner dance fiend and let the beat wash over you.

Ibiza’s Top 10

10. Necropolis del Puig des Molins The cemetery of ancient Ibiza holds a plethora of beautiful (if rather spooky) monuments.

5. Las Benirras This pebbly stoned beach is a haven for sunbathers and snorkelers.

9. Sant Antoni de Portmany This once sleepy fishing village is now a hub of nightclubs and bars.

4. Playa de Ses Salines The crystal clear water of this sheltered bay is home to many a luxury cruiser.

8. Estatua del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Erected during the Spanish Civil War, the statue has the best views of the island.

3. Es Vedra Take a quick boat trip to this uninhabited nature reserve.

7. Church of Saint Agnes Built in honour of the patron saint of the island, it provides a respite from the hustle and bustle.

2. Cala Bassa This beach is more famous for promenading than swimming, so get your swagger on.

6. D’Alt Villa The old part of town is home to some beautiful architecture.

1. Castle of Ibiza World Heritage-listed and well worth the trip.

  • SoapUp - One of the brightest and busiest gay clubs in Ibiza.

Ibiza Events

Revelta i Beneides de Sant Antoni Abat in January celebrates the life of St. Anthony with bonfires throughout the island.

April sees one of the largest yachting events in the world, the Princess Sofia Trophy.Feel slightly sickened at the sight of so much money being paraded by the glitzy and glamorous of European society.

The first Sunday in May is the most colourful, with the Festa de Maig spring flower festival colouring Ibiza’s streets and houses with local and imported flowers.

September’s Diada de Catalunya national holiday is marked with a large parade followed by dancing and local food stalls.

When To Go

  • September is a great time to visit as the clubs are winding up after a busy season, which means cheaper drinks and friendlier staff.
  • June is great because it’s the beginning of the peak season so the hangover has not yet begun. The temperatures are also starting to climb for summer.
  • Winter in Ibiza can seem a bit miserable as the weather is cold and most businesses are closed.

Getting Around

  • Public transport is a great way to travel on the island, as special lanes guarantee you’ll get there on time.
  • Hire cars are overly expensive and driving is dangerous, with Ibiza drivers notoriously careless.
  • Walk. Why not? The sun’s out and you’re on a Spanish isle. Pack your sturdy shoes and keep your eyes open.
