Only now familiar to many because of the 2008 Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Oviedo is indeed as romantic as Javier Bardem's character made it out to be on screen. From the UNESCO World Heritage cathedral to the 16th century university, the city of 220,000 people has a wealth of historic landmarks. The city of Gijón is not only worth a visit as well, but acts as a superb base for roadtrips across the coast.
