Located on South Korea’s northeast coast, the county of Yangyang is famous for songi, a pine mushroom, and seafood. You can find both at the popular Yangyang market, which is held on dates that have a ‘4’ or ‘9’ in them. This large outdoor market offers many varieties of fresh produce and fish. If you feel up for adventure, head to the mountainous Seoraksan National Park, which is about an hour’s drive from Yangyang and a popular destination for tourists and locals. There are Buddhist temples and statues located throughout the park as well as waterfalls and notable rock formations, such as the Heundeulbawi (Rocking Rock) and Ulsanbawi, which is reached by climbing 800 steps. Make sure you visit Naksansa, or Naksan Temple, a Buddhist temple complex regarded as one of Korea’s eight great eastern scenic areas. Back in Yangyang, check out Naksan Beach and its can’t-miss mushroom-shaped lighthouse. There are shops and seafood restaurants around the harbour area. Try the local fish stew, mae-un tang, which can be found on many menus. There are several festivals throughout the year, including the Songi Mushroom Festival and Salmon Festival in late September to early October, and a New Year’s Festival on the beach.
