With a rich history and heavy US influence due to local military bases, Daegu is the real up-and-comer of South Korean tourism. The star is Palgongsan, a mountain about 20km (12.5 miles) from the city centre that is home to three temples: Donghwasa, Pagyesaand Eunhaesa, each with its own unique religious dedication and aesthetic charm. If you’re not too quick to judge a book by its cover, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise in Daegu.

Daegu History
- Haeinsa Temple - This historic temple is famous for its collection of Buddhists texts.
- Donghwasa - This temple is famous for its collection of large Buddhist statues.
- Daerungwon - These ancient ruins make a great day trip to learn the history of the area.
- Cheonmachang Tomb - Just outside of Daegu, this tomb is one of the top historical attractions in the area.
- Yugasa Temple - This temple was founded by a Buddhist teacher in 827 AD and is still a great place to meditate.
Daegu Art & Culture
- Gyeongiu National Museum - This museum reveals the rich history and culture of the region.
- Daegu Culture and Arts Centre - This centre houses works of art as well as artefacts that tell about the colourful history of Daegu.
- Yongyeonsa Temple - This temple has been rebuilt several times, making it a great place to see the evolution of local architecture.
- Buinsa Temple - This temple is famous for its beautiful West Pagoda, rebuilt in the 1960s.
- Wongtongjeon Hall - This hall in Pagyesa Temple was rebuilt in the 17th century after it was burnt down during a Japanese invasion.

- Seomun Market - This traditional street market in Daegu is a must-see for those who want the real Korean shopping experience.
- Dong A Shopping Centre - This large complex has a number of stores selling everything from designer clothes to food.
- Debec Plaza - Locals flock to this plaza for designer labels and small boutique shops.
- DDC Textile Complex - Those looking to buy the best in Daegu textiles come to this large store.
- Yasi Golmok Street - This famous shopping street is home to many unique shops and restaurants.

- 2 Ban - This small Daegu gay bar features karaoke and is a great place to grab a snack.
- Dive - This gay club is a great place to meet for a smart cocktail.
- Rookie - This clean and nice gay bar attracts a young professional crowd.
- Tombo - This elegant gay bar attracts a more sophisticated crowd.
- Mask - This karaoke bar is a great place to meet new people and sing the night away.
Daegu Events
Preview in Daegu is one of the biggest textile fairs in the world. If you’re interested in fabrics and developments in synthetic fibre, rush to Daegu in March.
If there’s one thing Korea does better than kimchi, it’s manufactured pop music. Catch a whole heap of acts at the Dongseongno Festival in May
Celebrated each October, the Palgong Goryeo Cultural Festival commemorates the acts of the brave ancestors who set out to unite the peninsula. We’re unsure how cooking lessons come into this, but we’re glad they do.
October’s Dalseong Chunghyoje celebrates loyalty and family and is a key festival in a country with a great sense of history and pride.
Over 12 days in October, the South Korean art community stages interactive exhibitions in both traditional and unconventional spaces for the Bongsan Fine Art Festival.
When To Go
- June to September are the wettest months, with typhoons occurring annually.
- Autumn falls (ho-ho!) between September and November. Temperatures are pleasant and the trees are at their colourful best.
- In winter (December to March), notoriously fierce winds can make it bitterly cold.
Getting Around
- Covering most of downtown and the outer suburbs, the Daegu subway is safe and reliable.
- If you’re in a taxi, direct the driver to the monument nearest your destination and walk rest of the way.
- Tour buses are a great way to see most of the major temples and attractions in one day.
