Bravura Bratislava
Slovakia’s history-laden culture and confusing citadel-meets-spaceship architecture is most intensely experienced in its immense but surprisingly cosy capital. From the labyrinthine cobblestone streets to the starkly modern skyline, Bratislava is a haphazard jumble of old and new that entreats you to get out your most complex GPS system and explore it.
Bizarre construction isn’t all Bratislava has acquired – see one of its latest additions, the newly acquired rare white tigers, at Bratislava Zoo. Then navigate your way over to the Stalinist-chic façade of the country’s largest art collection at the Slovak National Gallery, or descend on the intriguing Devlin Castle – once the military playground for ninth-century warlord Prince Ratislav. Or even just meander around the city centre, where street peeps and glitterati co-exist in a delightfully endearing bustle.
Bratislava's Top 10
10. Plague Column This 18th century column is all that remains of the city’s old fish market, but is well worth a meander around. |
5. Hlavné Nám The charming centre of the Old Town is home to stunning Baroque palaces and killer seasonal markets. |
9. Pálffy Palace For a mishmash of the past, come and explore this 18th century house built on 13th century foundations and filled with 19th and 20th century art. |
4. Treasury A highlight of this rich source of history is undoubtedly the 25,000-year-old Venus of Moravany – a miniature fertility statue carved from a mammoth tusk. |
8. Michael Tower Take in the city views from the top of Bratislava’s only remaining tower gate. The collection of antique swords is also worth checking out. |
3. Slavín War Memorial Wander through the gardens and gaze up at the colossal pillar, a monument to the 6,000 Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in WWII. |
7. Museum of Clocks This curious museum is located in what is reputedly the skinniest house in Europe. |
2. Bratislava Castle Revel in the view from the ramparts of the gorgeous 15th century fort that dominates the city. |
6. New Bridge This modernist structure is an odd sight jutting out from the castle spires, and is known as the ‘UFO’ for its spaceship-like appearance. |
1. St. Martins Cathedral Feel like royalty in this beautiful gothic cathedral, the largest and one of the oldest in the country, and once the home turf of Hungarian kings. |
