The fort has a long and vital history within Singapore. Built by the British in the 19th century on a hill that was home to Sir Stamford Raffles, the “Father of Singapore”, the fort was a major army outpost for well over a century. Today the historic site is a paramount recreation park and cultural attraction in Singapore. A host of many annual festivals and events in the city, Fort Canning contains many notable landmarks, from James Brooke Napier Memorial to Raffles’ Government Hill House.
