We recently spent two nights at the Scenic Hotel in Auckland. I would not recommend to anyone to stay there if you actually intend to sleep while you're there. We were in a room on the main road, Queen Street, and across the street is a bar that seems quite popular. How do we know this? Because we could hear them. I don't mind a random car horn honking or sirens. Those noises would go through any hotel window. We could hear yelling...conversations...the live music. The windows were paper thin, drafty and the paint was peeling. Looks like they're original to the building. The beds are quite soft and comfy, plenty of towels, good water pressure and overall, the rooms are clean. Great view of the Auckland SkyTower. Easy walk to the harbour from the hotel. When asked about our stay, I politely said that the room was nice, but we didn't sleep well because of how loud it was. I was told in reply: "Yes, well, Friday night on Queen Street is something to be experienced." It would have been nice to at least have had an apology, but I suspect that they've heard this before.

Upon arrival we knew our stay was going to be a good one. Check-in staff were warm and friendly, offering advise about where the show building was etc. The restaurant staff were equally as good, we all enjoyed 2 lovely meals there. It was nice that the staff took the time to speak to us, even when very busy with other customers. Overall rated the experience 5+. One of our party has already booked another stay, and I know I would have no trouble recommending the hotel to friends and family

Hotel location was great, walking distance to Civic Theatre, Sky City, and Viaduct basin. Rooms very clean and beds really comfortable. Staff lovely. No double glazing on windows so rooms on Queen St can be noisy with traffic and nightclub patron noise.

This hotel was fantastic for our needs. It is very well located for the city. The small kitchenette enabled us to make tea and coffee and snacks. The bed was comfortable the room and bathroom were clean and comfortable. Valet parking is not on site so remember not to leave anything that you may need in your car. It takes approx 10-15 mins to get your car to the hotel. Wifi no problem cost me $5 for the day for my I Pad. Maybe they could think about making this free for a certain amount of Mbytes. I was very happy with my stay and would definitely stay here again.

Really handy, right on Queen St. Excellent eating place downstairs, were given vouchers for discount when checking in. Spacious room (studio) with kitchen facilities. Comfortable bed (king). Only drawback is lack of parking - valet parking $20 was a good option. Would stay again.

Location was perfect, staff pleasent. The night was ruined by the bed which we were sure was stuffed with straw, the roll together was awful, lumpy and no extra blankets. The air conditioner was above our heads which rumbled all night. Apart from that it was clean and accommodating, but sorry we won't be back.

The front counter staff were very friendly and helpful. All request were attended to swiftly. The room has everything we wanted, kitchen, nice shower, spacious and comfortable. That was the reason we went back to stay again on our way back from the South Island. The airport express bus stops right in front the hotel.(fee NZ$ 16 one way.)

Found the staff most obliging - able to occupy room on early arrival. Found the layout of the studio apartment interesting and it worked well. Extremely clean linen and apartment facilities. Very easy access to entertainment area of the city. Would definitely stay again.

If you can take only a couple of things with you to create a home away from home it is your bed & shower. Too often hotel beds are sad & showers barely have an effect. The bed at the Scenic was better than home, it was fantastic. We wanted to take it home. Similarly the shower reminded us of home, so we were more relaxed and ready to enjoy Auckland. The location was great to walk & explore all the way up to K Road, out to Parnell and down to the Harbour.

This hotel has the most comfortable beds of any that I have stayed in - even better than my own bed. So I was horrified to be woken before 6am by the noise on the building site next door. sweet dreams interrupted by a jack hammer! I tried to block it out but no luck as the contractors yelled, banged and hammered!! Not the hotel's fault but I had asked for a quiet room and was assured by three different people that it was - not one mentioned the building site. Not pleased I complained the next morning and the answer was "yes everyone complains it is beyond our control and that room is quiet when they aren't on site!" Well yes- true - but honesty is important too and Scenic Hotel - your staff let you down and Auckland Council has let you down. The resource consent should specify 7am and then your guests forewarned would be able to make the choice. On another positive note the service from the young lady in the restaurant was great - pity the food meat (pork belly) was very marginal - the staff member agreed and commented her father who cooked great pork belly would have also been scathing - but she was not allowed to credit the meal - she did however provide a free glass of wine - and suggested I ordered some bread (charged for) to make up for the poor meal. I think the meal should have been credited - any descent restaurant would have but clearly it was not in the ethos or authority of the manager on the night to do this. I avoided the restaurant for the next two night and will do so in the future. However despite these not so good comments - the hotel was clean, the breakfast in the morning - substantial and lovely and the bed - the best. I look forward to staying again ( maybe when the building next door is finished) and when i hope they find a new meat supplier!! if other Scenic Hotels have the same level of bed comfort I will seek them out.

It was my second stay at the Scenic. Initially, I was placed in a back room. It was kind of dark by not having much natural light, and a very noisy airconditioning unit outside, but after a simple request for a change the staff were more than obliging to do so. On the plus side the rooms are fantastic, there's a great restaurant downstairs, and the Airport Express bus stop is quite literally at the front door!!
