Riyadh General Information
The massive capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is where brilliant modernity and modest tradition meet and somehow, co-exist. Riyadh is a city where the Mutawwa'in patrol the streets and usher people to prayer as luxury sedans speed by and monitor public behaviour in malls where the dishdasha and abaya-clad shop at Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta. No other city on the planet so brazenly unites such apparent ideological poles. Ultimately, this is Riyadh’s singular pull. ... Read more »
As the capital and trophy city of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is the political, commercial and cultural heart of the Kingdom. In yet another paradox, the metropolis of 7 million people is systematically chaotic and indeed, graciously hospitable to non-Muslims (who need a sponsor to visit) who display deference. Visible contrasts lurk on the skyline as well. The spectacular US$ 1 billion 99-floor Burj Al-Mamlaka, or Kingdom Centre, soars over both desert and Riyadh’s old star landmark, the clay and mud-brick Masmak Fortress.

Nightlife
Riyadh is devoid of nightlife in the traditional sense of the word. Saudi Arabia observes Sharia (Islamic law), which forbids the consumption of alcohol and public social interaction between single members of the opposite sex. As a result, after sunset prayers, your best bet for a night of innocent fun is to dine out at a restaurant and relax at a coffeeshop.
Climate
The arid, desert climate of Saudi Arabia can stifle unwary visitors with oppressive heat. Peak temperatures in Riyadh average well over 42°C between June and August and a summer daytime high of 50°C is not unheard of. As such, the best time to visit for most is the mild to warm winter season from December to March.
- Winter (December to February) 9-23°C
- Spring (March to April) 15-33°C
- Summer (May to September) 26-44°C
- Fall (October to November) 15-35°C
