As a holy symbol and site of passionate veneration, Madinah is no ordinary tourist target. The city’s significance in Islam stems from the Masjid al-Nabawi or Mosque of The Prophet. Built by Muhammad in 622, the mosque’s prodigious expansion and enhancement over subsequent eras now culminates in a place of worship that accommodates close to 1 million people at the height of the Hajj. As a result, Masjid al-Nabawi is behind only Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram in size. While modern Madinah is a vibrant city of interest, non-Muslims face limits similar to those pervasive in Makkah. As a holy site of Islam, only adherents to the faith can penetrate the haram, or sanctuary, of the city. Outside of this spiritual core of Madinah however, non-Muslims may visit and mingle.

Activities

Like Makkah (Mecca), the principal activity for visitors to Madinah is the Hajj, or annual holy pilgrimage. Only Muslims can enter the haram, or holy sanctuary, of the city.
