My wife and I booked royal kona for 9 nights. This was the start of our honeymoon. My wife emailed both the hotel and the restaurant Don's the Beachcomber at least ten times. We arrived Christmas day and hence wanted to book a Christmas dinner at Don's, given it was also our honeymoon we were booked in for a beautiful dinner on the waters edge. They even asked for her favorite flower so the table could be decorated. Email after email to confirm this and when we arrived-nothing. Not even a booking for a standard dinner. Sour taste from the start. We were also advised a bottle of champagne was organized for our arrival for our honeymoon-also not provided. One morning after finishing our buffet breakfast included in our booking fully paid for-we asked for our coffee in take away cups as we had done 4 mornings prior. Lady working treated us like dirt and told us we had to pay. It was later confirmed we didn't need to but it was the way she looked at us and treated us like we had just walked in off the street. Two days later, another waitress acted in a similar way because my wife didn't have the reservation card on the table immediately upon entering the buffet. She treated my wife like she was free-loading. Poor, poor customer service at this hotel! I could go on all night.

Parking 10$ a day! Internet 10$ a day! Check your bill, even if you didn't use an internet!

Kona is the least touristy island which makes it a great place to kick back and relax away from the crowds. This is the place to stay. Location is great. Best part about this resort is that it's right on the water so you hear the waves crashing from your room and the whole resort grounds. Bar food is nice and fresh, not too overpriced. Staff are friendly and helpful. The lagoon is very cool and you can see angel fish and other aquatic life hanging out in there. The interior decor is a little dated. The guests are fairly mixed but seem mainly to be married couples revisiting but also a bevy younger travelers too.

The location of this hotel was very good but as far as amenities and friendly staff that is a much different matter. The bathroom was extremely short on the number of towels. The coffee maker in the room was never replenished after the maid came. Extra cost was never openly indicated. Parking was $10 a night per vehicle, wi fye was $10 a day. Extra charges that were not legitimate were added on to the total bill and had to be removed. The restaurant staff were beyond rude, never smiled, were unhelpful, created an atmosphere which was very unpleasant.

The Royal Kona was a great place to relax and to enjoy the sights and sounds of Kona. It is only a short, five minute walk to the friendly shopping and eating district frequented by many tourists.

The hotel is at a very good location, very close to the downtown. It is quite old as compared to the pictures they have put up online. They don't have microwave in the room. You have to pay extra for the coffee. Get your own conditioner, they don't have any. You can see their Luau dances for free from your hotel room or the pool.

The pros: I loved the decor and architecture. We had an ocean front room which has a lovely view that was worth the upgrade. There are several lounge and sitting areas with slightly different looks making for nice variations in scenery all in one location. It's near one end of the tourist strip, which was great for us because it was slightly away from the noise and gaudiness but well within walking distance of all of the activity, shops and restaurants. They offer a nice luau on site, which we attended and enjoyed. (I gathered that some other locations' luaus are more elaborate.) The cons: the rooms and some of the lounge areas were a little worn in places, needing paint or other maintenance touch ups. The rooms were a little smaller than I expected. The restaurant closes early and there is no room service at all. Overall, the pros outweighed the cons and we enjoyed our stay.

Pros: Right by the ocean and close to shops and restaurants. Room was comfortable and charming. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Cons: Wireless internet and parking not included ($10/day each). My bathroom faucet gushed water all over the counter every time I used it. The room was sometimes noisy (could hear other people flush toilets in the next room and I was situated over the main entrance so I could hear people coming and going all night).

Very relaxing and enjoyable. Evenings were the best especially on the lanai by the oceanside under the moonlight, listening to the surf and enjoying the sea breezes.

The rooms were comfortable and had a nice view. The staff provided some misinformation at times. The lounge and grounds are lovely. The drinks from the bar- not so good. The price was good.

This is our second time staying at this hotel. The location puts many options, eating, shopping, entertainment within easy walking distance. The dolphins in front of the hotel were marvelous as were the sunsets. We booked garden view rooms and they all had great views of the ocean without being oceanfront rooms.

Bottom line: don't go if you're a germophobe. My rating is based on averaging my opinion with my wife's. I give it a 4, she gives it a 2. The good: Location was great on Ali-i drive, near restaurants and beaches. Outdoor bar was perfectly situated and had nice kalua pig quesadillas. Got the Ocean View room which had a gorgeous view. Hotel was quiet and had flawless internet. Open center architecture in the Lagoon Tower made it not seem like we were crawling into a hallway to get to our room... a definite plus for me. TV was nice with decent channel selection. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The ok: Pool was not too inspiring, but this is an older hotel so it's not unexpected. Also, I came for the beaches, not the pool. It's a little dark in the rooms, especially the bathrooms which gives a sense of gloom and dirt. The not so good: Went with the wife who is a bit more of a clean freak that I am. (What woman isn't more fastidious than the average guy?) She felt it was a little unclean. Admittedly, with the AC off for a while, the room smelled a little musty, but it's on the beachfront so I expect it. I do think I picked up an allergen from the room though so maybe she was onto something. Bottom line: don't go if you're a germophobe. My rating is based on averaging my opinion with my wife's. I give it a 4, she gives it a 2.

This was my 2nd visit to the Royal Kona but it will likely be my last. The first time I visited the ambiance was quiet and serene and my room location was 100% to my satisfaction. I could hardly wait to return. This visit was quite disappointing. i had requested a room that did not have a connecting door to the next unit. When I arrived at check in there were no such rooms in the category I booked so I was forced to pay $27 extra per night for a room that met this criteria. A noisy party below my unit -spoiled the peace I was seeking.. I can do better elsewhere next time

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Kona for the second time. It was once again a great experience. The hotel is well kept, clean and you can't beat the location. All of the staff was very nice and always helpful. Access to free wireless Internet at the hotel would be an added plus.
