Boqueron Rundown
On the other side of the Mona Passage from the Dominican Republic and the island of Hispaniola, breezy Boqueron marks the ultimate southwest spot of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. About as far as you can get, distance and vibe-wise, from capital San Juan (a city that feels chaotic by comparison), Boqueron unfurls all the telltale beach bliss the unincorporated territory of the United States of America is famous for. ... It is in this veritable barrio of less than 5,000 people in the town of Cabo Rojo that Puerto Rico feels most like a Caribbean island in the same ‘hood as Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda. All the bellwether signs are here: a local economy still reliant on the catch of the day, a handful of chill resorts with informal charm, and clapboard beach shacks that double as gourmet restaurants. Indeed, the best compliment you can pay Boqueron is that it feels different from the rest of Puerto Rico.
The seclusion of Boqueron and magnificent Boqueron Bay is a bit of a sham, however, and happily so. The fact is that for all of the resort commune’s allure and nascent growth potential, a cluster of phenomenal points of interest reside on the doorstep. The San German-Cabo Rojo area, for one, teems with remarkable architectural landmarks that harken back to the initial colonial settlement of the island. Additionally, parks like Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge and Refugio de Boqueron protect precious wildlife and plant diversity.

When To Go
Puerto Rico has a tropical monsoon climate and average temperatures in the vicinity of 80°F (27°C). In summer it is not unusual to have temperatures exceed the 90°F (32°C) mark, most notably when winds move in from the south.
In December and January, temperatures drop to average lows of 71°F (22°C). Even with the incessant menace of the Atlantic tropical cyclone season, rainfall is relatively even on the island from month to month, with 50 in (1,300 mm) per year on average. Overall, however, January to March is the de facto dry season.
While the winter months represent the apogee of tourism in Puerto Rico, the long hurricane interval from July to November offers ample gaps between storms for affordable holiday fun.
